(Howie) Carr: Let's not polish Saint Bobby Kennedy's halo yet
Boston Herald ^ | June 3, 2018 | Howie Carr

Stand by for a torrent of slobbering stories about Robert F. Kennedy as the 50th anniversary of his assassination approaches Wednesday.

The main speaker at the official ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery will be Bill Clinton. I kid you not - Bill Clinton!

Look, of course it’s terrible that RFK was murdered at the age of 42, leaving behind all those kids and Ethel pregnant with the last of them. But since his passing, there’s been even more historical revisionism about Bobby than with almost any of the other liberal icons.

So, as the gushing from his fawning biographers like Comrade Chris Matthews of MSNBC begins, let’s remember a few things about St. Bobby.

First of all, he was not going to be elected president in 1968. Vice President Hubert Humphrey had an insurmountable lead for the Democrat nomination.

Another fact: Before Teddy got kicked out of Harvard for cheating, Bobby was getting expelled from Portsmouth Priory for … cheating. It’s a family tradition.

[Snip]

Then there’s Bobby’s reputation as a "good family man." But he caught the "adultery virus," as his brother-in-law Peter Lawford put it, from JFK. When the Soviet Union fell, one of the documents discovered in the KGB archives was a note about asking for a woman to be sent up to his hotel room during a visit to Moscow in 1956.

But the one name you're never going to hear or read anywhere else in the next 72 hours is Marilyn Monroe. She was originally JFK's girlfriend and the president passed her down to Bobby.

-—having observed the hysteria over this mutt during his early campaign (the adoring mobs in California tearing his shoes off, etc.)—another guy and I in my car pool had a 6 pack bet on how long it would be before somebody assassinated him-—the other guy won-—

Great column!

Another RFK blot was right after the Bay of Pigs. There were Alabama Air National Guard pilots in Nicaragua who had been training anti-Castro Cubans for the invasion. The Americans disregarded the order to abandon the anti-Castro Cubans on the beach, and took off and bombed Cuba in support of the invasion.

The Americans were shot down over Cuba, and at first it was not known if they had been taken alive, like Gary Powers in Russia the year before.

RFK in particular was worried about the negative publicity of another U2-type incident.

Before it was known the fate of the Americans, RFK told the CIA liaison at the WH, “Those American pilots had better g**d*** well be dead.”

Turns out the pilots were dead instead of captured, but then RFK tried to block their families from getting military pensions. It took pressure from a large Kennedy donor to finally get partial pensions for them.

Never knew that Hubert Humphrey was the heir apparent in 1968. He was just as discredited over the Vietnam war as LBJ who dropped out of the nomination.

RFK was on his way to victory when he was assassinated; for millions he would bring back Camelot and the Aristocracy of Conscience after years of the hamfisted Texan’s rule. With RFK gone, the DNC had no choice but to plug in HHH. The riots at the Democrat convention that summer were all about Humphrey keeping us in Vietnam (as a Vietnam vet I still say that was better than cut-and-run) which meant maintaining the draft which was the real reason for the rioting.

Interesting that Howie Carr’s keenest criticism of RFK was that he was antigay. Makes you go hmmm...

Here about the new Marylin Monroe stamp? Lick it and you are a honorary Kennedy.

Bobby was in church with his handlers, one of whom was assigned to put money in the basket. He sneered, “don’t you think I’d have given more than that”. IOW, elitist free with other people’s money.

Read that in an Economist review of an RFK biography years ago - wish I could find the darned thing. Back before the magazine was taken over by journalists parroting the MSM line (e.g., advocating global warming taxes).

While I don’t have a problem with family members being actively involved in Government... I’ve always been disturbed by the ‘Dynasty’ label (or similar) applied to the Kennedy family. Same with Bush, same with Clinton, and same with lower levels like Cuomo and etc. The only label more repulsive than ‘dynasty’ is ‘royalty’, and I fear there’s too many Americans today finding no fault with such a concept.

WHY would a Governor suggest the wife of John McCain should be appointed US Senator? Does Arizona somehow owe it to the McCain family? What political favors will be owed for this? There should be tar and feathers for such a thing.

I will always hate that vindictive little b@stard for what he did to the Cuban rebels during Bay of Pigs. I had forgotten about the pilots who did bomb Cuba and gave their lives.

I do recall that they succeeded in destroying the Cuban air force except for three T-33’s. These were all Castro needed to bomb the rebels and doom their invasion to liberate Cuba.

Worthless Kennedys!!

RFK considered dropping out if he lost Calif. I do believe he won by 4 points. Remember Humphrey was 57 years old and frumpy looking. Voters will go for the flash. Think Obama, JFK, and even BJ(sarc).

Agreed.

Bobby would have won the nomination and been elected President if he had not been assassinated.

Poor Bobby—thought he would finally finish his brother’s business and “Break the CIA into a thousand pieces” as well as end the defense contractor cash cow called Vietnam.

They put something like thirty bullets into the LA hotel kitchen walls the night of the California primary—somebody wasn’t taking _any_ chances...

Howie cited the antigay thing to point out the hypocrisy of the liberals.

Howie’s not gay.

It goes back to 1932, the wife of Arkansas Sen. Thaddeus Caraway appointed to fill his seat after his death. Direct result of the women’s right to vote movement.

Huey Long’s wife won the special election after he died in office around 1936.

Wives taking the seats of their deceased husbands has happened a few other times since, but several of those were just token appointments and the wives declined to stand election on their own.

RFK worked as a young attorney for Roy Cohn who was Joe McCarthy's chief counsel. Cohn acted as McCarty's mouthpiece during those famous (or infamous! Depending on your POV!) hearings. McCarthy dated one of the Kennedy girls (I forget which one!) for a while. McCarthy was a big friend of the family. Ike took on McCarthy not then Senator JFK. (Who was basically a do nothing senator!)

RFK had more right wing credentials then left wing. He took the left wing route because he and his political handlers knew they were fundamentally fools (the left wing adherents!). Also due to the unpopularity of the Vietnam war it was the path of least resistance.

I think we can safely say the Kennedys are political opportunists and always have been. They continue to be so to this day but in a (Thankfully!) diminished capacity.

Do you have a problem with the many figures of royalty in the Bible? One of them is Jesus Himself.

He may have overstated that fact but Humphrey had a good lead and by most people in the know at the time say he would have likely taken the nomination.

The establishment was behind Humphrey and the next primary would be in Illinois. Humphrey had the support of Richard Daley which likely would have guaranteed a win for him.

Illinois was the last of the 14 states and DC that held primaries at this time.

Humphrey’s campaign concentrated on winning the delegates in non-primary states and had secured the support of labor unions and big-city party bosses in much of what remained after the last primary (Illinois).

Count at time of assassination:

Hubert Humphrey 561
Robert Kennedy 393
Eugene McCarthy 258

Really the only feasible way that RFK could have been nominated is a “convention coup” and many believe that was simply not in the cards.
