VIENNA, Austria — The chief inspector of the UN’s nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resigned Friday, a spokesperson for the agency said.

No reason was given for Tero Varjoranta’s sudden departure, which comes days after US President Donald Trump took America out of the deal between Iran and world powers over its nuclear program.

“there is a possibility that he did care about his duties and was being stone walled by his superiors over the dump truck load of documents outlining the Iranian warhead program”

No honest person would choose to become a UN bureaucrat.
So Occam razor says he is a swamper.

Maybe his services are just no longer required. We should insist on our own inspectors in any future deals.

Is this the guy who acquiesced to the Iranians when they said that military sites weren’t included in the agreement? IIRC, the Iranians militarized several storage and production sites just after the agreement.

“I wonder if this guy shows up in any of the documents that Israel uncovered?”

That is a very good point.

In addition to that that operation, I’d expect that others have been underway as well. Clearly, the IAEA has been more of a lap dog than an aggressive pitbull against Iran. They probably identified this guy as part of the problem, or corruptly complicit. It looks to me that a lot of planning and preparation has gone on over the last year, and that the plan was put into operation when President Trump pulled out from the Iran deal (D-Day).

The Quds Force got slapped down in Syria within hours. Treasury Department and Gulf Arab States froze Quds Force money laundering accounts next day. This guy may have been confronted with evidence same day, but took a day or two to prepare his announcement. The Iranian currency (rial) is nosediving, and there are rumors of bank failures looming.

I think the Iranian regime is being taken down this Summer. If not, they will at least find themselves in a dramatically worse position, and forced to make a new deal.

But this guy might have just resigned in a huff, because he is offended by the US pullout - could be coincidence.

He has held the position since 2013, the JCPOA was agreed in 2015, so he was a key player in its formation. He might have been selected and installed as part of the effort to make it happen.

Mr. Varjoranta assumed the post of Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Safeguards on 1 October 2013. Prior to this, he was the Director General of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, STUK, in Finland. Between 2010-2012 Mr. Varjoranta served as a Director in the Nuclear Energy Department of the IAEA having previously worked as Division Manager in the International Science and Technology Centre in Moscow. Mr. Varjoranta has served as President of ESARDA, President of the European Nuclear Regulators Group (ENSREG) and as a member of SAGSI for seven years. He is a physicist by education (MSc and PhL) from Helsinki University.

Yeah that may be so. I was not necessarily suggesting some conspiracy per se but wondering what Iran says about him. The guy is from Finland and may just be a idealistic schmuck.

If you go to the IAEA web site and look at their documents it is clear they show all this progress with Iran's nuke program, e.g. 100% increase in this or that. They meaningless stats and little in the way of real facts to support their conclusions.
