George Will: Trump is no longer the worst person in government (Pence is)
Washington Compost ^ | May 9, 2018 | George Will

Donald Trump, with his feral cunning, knew. The oleaginous Mike Pence, with his talent for toadyism and appetite for obsequiousness, could, Trump knew, become America’s most repulsive public figure. And Pence, who has reached this pinnacle by dethroning his benefactor, is augmenting the public stock of useful knowledge. Because his is the authentic voice of today’s lickspittle Republican Party, he clarifies this year’s elections: Vote Republican to ratify groveling as governing.

Last June, a Trump Cabinet meeting featured testimonials offered to Dear Leader by his forelock-tugging colleagues. His chief of staff, Reince Priebus, caught the spirit of the worship service by thanking Trump for the “blessing” of being allowed to serve him. The hosannas poured forth from around the table, unredeemed by even a scintilla of insincerity. Priebus was soon deprived of his blessing, as was Tom Price. Before Price’s ecstasy of public service was truncated because of his incontinent enthusiasm for charter flights, he was the secretary of health and human services who at the Cabinet meeting said, “I can’t thank you enough for the privileges you’ve given me.” The vice president chimed in but saved his best riff for a December Cabinet meeting when, as The Post’s Aaron Blake calculated, Pence praised Trump once every 12 seconds for three minutes: “I’m deeply humbled. . . . ” Judging by the number of times Pence announces himself “humbled,” he might seem proud of his humility, but that is impossible because he is conspicuously devout and pride is a sin.

Between those two Cabinet meetings, Pence and his retinue flew to Indiana for the purpose of walking out of an Indianapolis Colts football game, thereby demonstrating that football players kneeling during the national anthem are intolerable to someone of Pence’s refined sense of right and wrong.

George Will is a highly educated person...and, simultaneously, an utterly self-absorbed idiot.

Will professes to want what most conservatives want and, in fact, was a leader in putting such ideas into the minds of many people over the decades. He favored such things as originalist judicial nominees, a strong military, less spending by government, lower taxes...we all know the drill. He also doesn’t like it when people rock the boat and act impolitely, because...rules.

Well, now comes along one Donald John Trump. He’s no conservative, and Will knows it and doesn’t like it. Neither is he a politician - he’s a lowly (though very successful) businessman and (gasp!) a purveyor of reality shows. More importantly to Will above all else (including politics), he doesn’t like how direct Trump is...because only “sophisticated” and “nuanced” people (like him) deserve to be in positions of power - people like John Kerry, even if Kerry undercuts American power and prosperity with every utterance and every vote they cast.

Except something happened on the trip from Will’s ideal world that (maybe) existed decades ago to now...the “sophisticated” and “nuanced” Republicans turned into a bunch of Big Government toadies, promising their constituents Republican and conservative things, but actually delivering Democrat and liberal things (oh, and just coincidentally, getting quite wealthy in the process). And this guy Trump - the one who isn’t sufficiently pure ideologically, and who is (in Will’s elitist mind) a bit of a buffoon - well, it turns out that not only his promises, but his actions in actually fulfilling those promises, are at least as conservative as those of Ronald Reagan, and perhaps more so. We have an originalist Supreme Court justice, literally dozens of new originalist/conservative Circuit Court judges, we have the largest tax cut in history - one so massive that it is drawing back literally hundreds of billions of previously untaxed earnings into the US, generating both revenue and new jobs. In addition, we have the single most massive cut in regulations in history (in just 15 1/2 months), with emphasis on boosting our energy independence by utilizing the incredibly massive oil, natural gas and coal resources with which we’ve been blessed. We have a Reaganesque military build-up which, coupled with an assertively pro-American foreign policy that has already forced North Korea to the negotiating table (which hasn’t been done since Ike privately threatened to nuke their asses the rest of the way back to the Stone Age if they didn’t release our POWs), and even has the ball-less Europeans kicking in more of their wealth for their own defense.

This list of pro-American and conservative accomplishments goes on and on - and the bottom line is that Trump is, from a policy perspective, doing pretty much everything that George Will ever advised, or even had a wet dream about...and despite these actual facts on the ground, Will simply cannot even give Trump a grudging or back-handed complement because...he’s not good enough, he’s not polite enough, he’s not “sophisticated” or “nuanced” enough - in short, he’s not an elitist prick like Will. So the spoiled little baby, who’s been pretty much left uninvited to those parties with all of the powerful people in the country, has to throw his tantrum. Well, guess what, George: we’re on to your games. You were once among the most admired columnists and authors out there, especially during the Reagan era, but you never moved on. People like you are EXACTLY why we got Trump - because your elitist snobbery, coupled with your obvious need to be part of the so-called ruling class, made you AND most Republican office holders into objects of hatred and contempt because you all lied to us in order to get what you REALLY wanted - power, money and recognition. After 77 years, it is way past time for you to hang up your cleats, George. Go home, enjoy your family during your remaining years, take in a few baseball games around the country...and watch Donald J. Trump do what no politician has done in a LONG time - actually do the bidding of the American people, not the big campaign contributors nor the elitist snobs like yourself. In short, just go away.

Hard to believe this guy ever had anything interesting to say about conservative policy. He’s nothing more than a gossip columnist now.

“George Will has jumped the shark.”

Amen to that.

I had years of memories of his commentary, for which I had respect. Emotionally with me, he has burnt that bridge.

I doubt that I will ever see him as really reasonable or honestly thoughtful again.

So much venom and vitriol for Trump and those around him - he clearly has lost his objectivity. Maybe it is just what he needs to do to maintain his paychecks from the Washington Post, NBC and MSNBC.

George Will is intellectual, you see. He used “oleaginous” instead of “greasy.” (Oleaginous is the chemists’ term used for “greasy.”)

“I think Will has lost it.”

He’s become a humanoid rabid chimp, shrieking incoherently and covered with as much of his own excrement as he hasn’t managed to throw. This article could have been written by Maxine Waters; there’s certainly no difference in intellectual quality between her and George Will.

I so wish I could take credit for that, but as always, I saw it on some Free Republic thread, laughed, then stole it!

Whoever you are out there...THANK YOU! (I still laugh when I see it...if I see the word “Thesaurus” in any context now, the first thing in my mind is “Crap!...”)
