As a person who has never served I'll definitely stop short of calling this is “good” as it's not my place to say, but I think one of the reasons the military is crumbling under social justice and landnav and grenades got the old heave-ho from army basic, and the incessant push for women in combat arms, is a result of Iraq and Afghanistan. Or rather, the public perception of Iraq and Afghanistan. Low-intensity, low-casualty, never-ending war with total air and tech superiority in the back of beyond has inured people to the horror of war. Time and again I've argued with people about girls being put in infantry units and heard some variation of “how hard is it to shoot out of a humvee.” Obviously that is not the reality at all, but day to day our guys probably tend to have it “easier” today in terms of everything except combat, which never changes at its core,than they did in Normandy, Bastogne, Korea, the central Highlands, etc etc etc.

Dear General Thomas,

Please stop talking to the public about jamming issues. All you are doing is informing our adversaries that their tactics are effective. The public can do nothing about it. You, your service, the DoD and the defense industry CAN.

Instead, use the intelligence collected by your EW birds to generate new tactics to counter the jamming.

Since these are ground based, a HARM or AARGM would do nicely too.

In any event, stop talking.

I strongly disagree with you.

Planes have always crashed, and will crash. Particularly military planes which have to train like they fight...aggressively.

The ship collisions (particularly the USS Fitzgerald and the USS McCain, not to mention the grounding of the USS Port Royal a few years back) are 100%, undeniably poor training and readiness.

Having looked closely at all three of the nautical scenarios, the conclusions are inescapable. The US Navy has gotten so far away from sound seamanship and so involved in social engineering that officers and crews are poorly trained. Combined with high cycle deployments, it is a recipe for mishaps.

The Navy itself had to reluctantly admit based on the incontrovertible evidence they their training, processes, and procedures are substandard.

It isn’t “hacking”. Not even close.

The most useful and mystifying land-nav hack I ever performed was to locate the precise location of our patrol on a map by shooting a pair of back-azimuths to a pair of known mountain peaks.

During the 'evening meeting' while on an operation SW of DaNang, our company CO gave our current map position. Since I was part of the 81mm mortar forward observer team, I'd been constanty following our position all day and knew that we were in a different location.

When I raised my hand and then disagreed with the 'Skipper', several 2nd Lt platoon commanders gave me (a lowly L/Cpl) dirty looks. I asked to have "the guns" fire a Willie Pete round at two separate points. Everyone shot a 'resection' (a pair of back-azimuths) and then agreed with me.

Later, in the middle of the night, the NVA hit us. If I'd taken the Skipper's location, I would have ended up calling down the first fire mission right on top of our heads.

Sometimes it is REALLY IMPORTANT to know your exact location!

I respectfully disagree.

I think all those things are a concerted effort to weaken us. The concepts you cite are driven from the top down; they do not originate from the masses.

No normal person ever called for those things and if queried would likely oppose them.

The above things are big problems because The Elites made them a problem, and it is all part of the agenda to destroy our Nation and culture.

You're assuming the general is implying that the jamming is effective. If I were in charge of the military, I would never tell an enemy when their tactics were effective. This could be classic misinformation.

The Bad Guys know their stuff is working with or without public comment from The Good Guys, because they’re not getting zapped by said platform.

I used cel nav every flight across the Atlantic and Pacific in the P-3 days (and nights). It is a highly perishable skill and cannot be whistled back in a crisis/AD basis.

EMP is electromagnetic pulse which is usually associated with nuclear explosions., however there are other ways to technically simulate it explosively. EMP happens once then it is over until the next device is detonated.

Jamming is different. Jamming is continuous. Sort of like listening to a radio program and suddenly being hit by so much static you cannot hear the program. Jammers are usually mobile units mounted on specialized trucks, but there are also ones in specialized planes.

F-35 might be immune to jamming technics used now, but there are always changes in a threat environment. So that can change. Drones and AC-130s are likely more susceptible to Russian jamming - an area the Russians excel in and an easier tech to crack. They are working their way up the scale so to speak.

In a shooting war, the GPS satellites would be the first to go, leaving position to map reading and direction finding skills with a compass. The US Navy is now practicing with sextants just in case.
