Waffle House Shooter Had Been Arrested in ‘Restricted Area’ Outside White House Last Year
The Truth About Guns ^ | 22 Apr 2018 | DAN ZIMMERMAN

As more is becoming known about Travis Reinking, the suspect wanted for murdering four people in a Nashville area Waffle House this morning, we’re hearing a familiar refrain. Reinking was well known to both federal and state authorities.

In July 2017, the U.S. Secret Service arrested Reinking for being in a “restricted area” near the White House, according to the Secret Service. After the arrest, his Illinois firearms authorization was revoked and local Illinois police seized four weapons.

The firearms were given back to his family.

“Among the weapons seized by those authorities was the AR-15 rifle used at the Waffle House today,” said Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron at a Sunday afternoon news conference.

Police believe Reinking’s father received the weapons after their confiscation, and returned them to his son. Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson said he believes under Illinois law, guns seized can be returned to someone who has a valid state authorization.

Reinking is still on the loose and police believe he may be armed. According to an NPR report, the only reason the number of casualties this morning wasn’t higher was that Reinking’s rifle jammed.

A Waffle House patron who saw that the gunman was “apparently struggling or looking at” with his rifle, and took advantage of the moment by “rushing him,” wresting the gun away and throwing it behind the counter – prompting the gunman to leave.

I’m not sure I could have restrained myself from blowing the guys brains out with his own gun had I been in the same situation.

Agreed, and it's likely a testament to James Shaw's character that he didn't beat the hell out of the shooter while he had the chance.

If he thought the Illuminati were meeting at Waffle House then he is doubly crazy.

True. Everyone knows they meet at Marie Calendars. World domination and great pie.

It’s not so much that he was clueless, he actively participated by handing those guns back after they were removed for a reason

And virtually everyone have the involvement of SSRI drugs.
When is this going to be recognized?

Personally, I want to know the following:

1) What mental illness was he being treated for?
2) Were SSRI’s prescribed to him?
3) What one- or two-degrees of separation, separates him from an FBI contact (like the last four or five shooters).
...
I agree...those are the only Q’s that matter.

I’m a little confused. Why would the Secret Service give a rat’s a$$ if this guy was near a WH? I mean why would the SS care about a WH? There is really something about this story that is off.

The seizure of firearms in Illinois was a procedural matter, triggered by the misadventure near the White House. I haven't seen anything on felony convictions or mental health facility commitments with regard to the shooter since then, and his dad may have returned the guns to him when visiting outside of Illinois. I agree that any family member should've been aware that Travis possessing guns was not the best idea, but there's some question about the actual legalities involved.

Kind of like the people clamoring for "red flag" laws following the Broward County, Florida mess - only a few states have them and they can't be retroactively wished into existence. Perhaps the lynch mob should wait for the full story before stringing-up the old man. Now, if someone knows of felony conviction or mental health commitment related to Travis Reinking which would make his possessing firearms in Tennessee illegal, I'll help y'all pick out the tree or lamppost.

I missed a step here.

Forgive me.

At what point did Illinois return the guns?

To the father, or *anyone* for that matter?

I'd think that Illinois would have kept them.

Oh ho HO!!

A shooter known to the FBI and the Secret Service.

He is nothing more than a Deep State agent. He is still on the lam, too.

If the guns were his fathers to begin with I would assume they were forced to return them.

Illinois has some procedural loophole where a relative of the listed owner of the firearms can take possession of the guns, as long as the relative has a valid Firearms Owner ID Card. It makes sense in most cases, because often seizures are prompted by red tape - delays in someone getting an FOID renewed, that sort of thing). I'm not sure that Illinois would've permanently withheld the shooter's FOID, based on an out-of-state trespassing charge.

Overall it doesn't seem like a bad provision, though I'll bet it's going to be revised soon.
