Personal opinion. I don’t think Russia would be blinking at all if they had a leg to stand on, legally, and Assad wasn’t guilty. So their action (offering to stand down in the event of an coordinated attack) spoke louder than their words, to me anyway.
That is a good point. Based on his history, we can’t assume that Assad is always going to protect minorities. But it’s not that hard to understand that a secular government in Syria is better than an Islamic state or endless war. Globalists may think a pipeline in Syria is more important, even if the US gets involved in a senseless war.

We dodged it possibly by prayer. But with all those factions, all the hatred for vengeance some one will bomb the wrong people or another huge gas bomb will happen. I know I sound cynical but there are too many even in our own country champing at the bit for war.

They cannot prevail in a conventional scenario and are sanely unwilling to risk MAD over Syria.
Their key to world power and prestige at this time is the perception they are a viable security alternative to the US. If they were to directly challenge us, and get their ass handed to them, that would all be exposed.
And they would have their ass handed to them in a conventional conflict. Decisively.
