WASHINGTON - Republican Sen. Mike Rounds on Sunday said President Donald Trump needs to explain his "endgame" to the American people when it comes to imposing tariffs on goods from foreign countries and said the U.S. should "quit fighting with Mexico and Canada."

The endgame? All nations will stop using tariffs, including China, and we’ll have whirled peas. Some of the more left-leaning investors, who like their connections with government (e.g., regulations against local, domestic competition), might be displeased, though.

Senator Rounds is another idiot who doesn’t understand the concept of not playing poker with your cards face up.

Peter Navarro has more trade knowledge in one of his bowel movements than you have in your entire body. You’re an idiot and should not post retarded vanities.

You’re quite amusing. I’m about 40 years beyond my teen years. I was on a long driving trip during the election, so I didn’t vote. But all the polls said Trump was going to win my state decisively, and he did. Just for the record, I’m a staunch Trump supporter. This tariff dispute at this time just looks like a set-up to me, by Obama holdovers. I’m not an economist but I have many years of business experience, including corporate finance experience, so I know how these capital spending decisions are made. And this trade dispute could easily delay some capital projects. I’ll take a look for some comments by economists and try to post some links.

“You can’t focus just on the steel and aluminum industries going into an election.”

Ah but the tariffs will probably not just be limited to steel and aluminum. To effect the trade imbalance Trump will likely cast a much wider net. Now is probably a good time to buy whatever you think you will ever need and store them along with the survival gear in the bunker underneath the trailer.

You think our navy should be dependent on China for steel for our naval fleet? You have no inkling that China wants to control all major industries?

I said it’s fine to make an exception if there really is a national security concern. But US Steel and Nucor appear to be doing OK in recent years. I’m open to tariffs if we really need them to defend a crucial industry.

We are standing up to China and other nations that have gamed us for decades. Funny, when those nations were treating us unfairly, nobody gave a “S”.

Now that we’re defending our economy, all of a sudden our reaction is blamed for starting a trade war.

Hell, the other side has been conducting a trade war for decades now. Finally, we’re joining the battle.

It’s about time too... (well, way past it > IMO)

The balance of payments deficits and consequent enormous debts at every level of government were caused by commie traitors who moved too much manufacturing to foreign despotic slavery nations and continue to lie with figures from American-”based” manufacturing on foreign soil. That evil global policy has nearly destroyed the United States. It’s not right to aid and abet an enemy against the United States.

Yeah but a KEY idea to understand here is that, yes, we can potentially win trade wars with countries where we have a big trade deficit, but the job losses from retaliatory tariffs happen immediately through lost revenue, while the job gains can take years as companies build confidence in the market and increase capex. A trade war could be a good long-term economic strategy in some cases, but it could be disastrous election strategy going into November. Winning a trade war is not a simple task...the timing of events is tricky and we have to watch out for fallout in the next elections.

PA, MI, WI and OH

These states saved us from Hillary. Trump promised he would bring jobs back so they voted for him. No one else could have won there. I think we have seen the last free trade Republican. You just can’t win the Electoral college with a promise to people jobs will go to make other countries better

No, you are in league with the GOPe morons who sold out this country in the name of free (as opposed to fair) trade. Trump’s endgame is already playing out, as China is showing signs of leveling the playing field. And all the corporatist morons (like you) can do is bleat the same sh*t sandwich you have served up for decades, demanding we eat it and enjoy it.

The objective, to improve this country’s trade position, is accomplished by fighting instead of by surrendering like GOPe Uniparty Deep State hacks do.

He campaigned on strong economic growth and job growth. This kind of public dispute isn’t the way to get that.

Yeah, because we had such great job growth listening to the free traders and open immigration proponents.

You seem to not care that quiet negotiations have caused the situation President Trump is trying to remedy. And flailing your chest over your supposed superior knowledge tells most people how little of it there likely is.

Then you never had an eco class, slept through/cut most of your history classes, or went to lousy schools.

Some "staunch supporter" you...NOT! And a lousy citizen to boot! I guess you never heard of an "ABSENTEE BALLOT".

I have NEVER missed voting; not EVER...not even when I was in college and out of state3rs could NOT vote in the state they went to college in, when they lived with their parents, during the rest of the year!

If you were such a *cough*, *cough" "staunch Trump supporter", then WHY were you NEVER on any of the TRUMP RALLY THREADS?

If you were such a *cough*, *cough*, *cough* "staunch Trump supporter" then just WHY don't you know that he talked about TARIFFS since the day he announced running?

Don't bother looking up what some "economists" have to say...look to what is going on RIGHT NOW with China, as well as to factual history!

So let me get this straight...1)you never paid much ( any? ) attention to what President Trump said prior to being elected 2) did NOT bother to vote for him ( to much trouble to be bothered with, for you ? ) 3) don't know any factual history regarding tariffs 4) don't bother to keep up with the news and so, have NO idea that China is beginning to cave, which is due to the whole tariffs bit. And I/anyone reading your posts, should take your word for it, that YOU understand economics, tariffs, and what it means for the midterm elections...WHY ?

But US Steel and Nucor appear to be doing OK in recent years.

I don't want OK. I want growth. And US Steel is re-opening a mill in direct response to Trump's actions. I guess you are the kind of free trader who sees OK as hunky-dory. I am not.
