Yeah but a KEY idea to understand here is that, yes, we can potentially win trade wars with countries where we have a big trade deficit, but the job losses from retaliatory tariffs happen immediately through lost revenue, while the job gains can take years as companies build confidence in the market and increase capex. A trade war could be a good long-term economic strategy in some cases, but it could be disastrous election strategy going into November. Winning a trade war is not a simple task...the timing of events is tricky and we have to watch out for fallout in the next elections.

I think the tariff issue has lots of challenges and risks but I am not sure mid-term elections is one of them. Even lots of democrats like tariffs and bringing back factory jobs. In the end there is never a good time to do root canals or tariffs.
