I Was a Liberal Who Worked at Fox News. Here's What That Taught Me About Arguing Politics
Time ^ | April 10, 2018 | Sally Kohn

It may seem surprising for a liberal commentator like myself, but from 2010 to 2013, I worked in the most prominent den of American conservatism: Fox News. During my time at the network I came to realize how condescending I’d been in my views about not only the people who worked at Fox News but the people watching at home. And condescension is just a snooty form of prejudice; we are only condescending to those we feel are inherently beneath us. The more I got out of my own liberal bubble, the more I met other conservatives who were neither stupid nor hateful — or at least no more deliberately hateful than I was. Those experiences really challenged my biases and assumptions. I’m not saying that Sean Hannity is the nicest person on the planet; his political views are certainly not anywhere near what I would reasonably call nice. What I am saying is that I realized that the person I’d thought of as entirely cruel, as the caricature of a horrific right-wing monster, is actually caring and kind, and a good dad and a supportive friend. Including a supportive friend to me.

Oh, please.

Just because Fox may sometimes tell a little more of the story than CNN, MSNBC, et al, does NOT make them conservative.

I understand the liberal mindset, because I was one when young.

It is a form of self-righteousness and arrogance, combined with ego.

Once you begin to realize you do not have a monopoly on truth and lack wisdom, nor are we the center of the earth, the scales will fall from your eyes. This sort of humility is also why God-fearing Christians are natural conservatives.

At some point, going back before 2000.....I think most all Republicans and Democrats could socialize....meet up at family get-togethers....worship in the same church...and conduct regular relationships.

Something clicked in this period of 2000 and 2010, and it became a confrontational attitude. This is in the period when you noticed magazines were now confrontational (not just Time and Newsweak, but Nat’l Geographic and Readers Digest). Comedians got into the act...to the point today where half of the comedians aren’t funny anymore.

So if Fox is not 24/7 bow before your lord and savior Obama channel, or if Fox is not 24/7 demonize the devil Trump, then it is somehow conservative?

Fox is not remotely conservative

Ugh, way too early in the morning for that. Please, let me be condescending to whatever that is.

Well golly gee. Let's light a camp fire and we'll all sing Kumbaya...

...we are only condescending to those we feel are inherently beneath us.

Whether she realizes it or not (and I suspect she does), the author is still condescending.

Agree. Fox is not, and never has been, a truly conservative outlet. She is a du CEO for thinking that.

She should work at American Thinker, Breitbart, Conservative Treehouse, Powerline, PJ Media, Judicial Watch, Legal Insurrection, or for Jim Rob here at FR if she wants a true conservative experience.

Then comes C — “convince.” This is where I put whatever I was inclined to spit out in the first place, about how comprehensive immigration reform actually raises wages and working standards for immigrant and citizen workers, or whatever point I wanted to make.

I guess the writer thinks 'convince' means 'lie'

Anyone who thinks fox is conservative is dreaming.

Sure, once in a while they’ll throw the deplorables a bone, but never forget they worked not only to derail the Trump candidacy, but pile on as the world tries to destroy him.

Also, it’s not what fox tell you, it’s what they FAIL to tell you that really matters.

I think the straw that broke the camel’s back was Al Gore’s reaction to losing the presidential election in 2000. he paved the way for the “Never [fill-in-the-blank]ers” to ply their trade.

Her approach won’t catch on because liberal ideas can’t survive the light of day.
