Assurance clears the way for a summit meeting between Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump
North Korea has told the U.S. that Kim Jong Un is prepared to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, clearing the way for a summit meeting between the North Korean leader and President Donald Trump, according to U.S. officials.
U.S. officials didn’t say when and how that assurance was delivered, but U.S. and North Korean officials have been in communication.
“The U.S. has confirmed that Kim Jong Un is willing to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” a Trump administration official said on Sunday.
Hopes for a breakthrough that might end more than six decades of animosity on the Korean Peninsula were raised last month when South Korean national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, told the White House that North Korea was prepared to engage in talks on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and would refrain from nuclear and missile tests.

Well, I agree with you that Kim probably thinks he will pull the same stunts he and his predecessors have pulled with Clinton, Bush, and Obama.
But I can’t help but think that Trump may surprise him.
Just my thoughts.

Why are all the major news outlets covering this at least slightly, yet not ONE WORD on CNN?
Nothing is going to happen without China’s support. And what’s in it for China — other than a Trump-started trade war?
I think the deal has already been done. Test site being disassembled. This is just planned theater leading up to the meeting.

I hope you are wrong but believe you are right. I think KJU wants a deal like Obama gave Iran.
Are you just blowing smoke or can you provide a list of comments Trump has made which depict him as being overly optimistic regarding these scheduled talks?

I realize Trump is a Republican, but this, if successful, ought to win him the Nobel Peace Prize. Instead, I guess it will again be awarded to Zero for making things right or something.
The problem is, you can’t trust that tub of lard any further than you can throw him.
I am no fan of Clinton (examine my posts 1997-2002) but I will say this: he and Perry at one time brought us closer to war with North Korea than Trump has so far. Fact. ROK President Kim Young Sam had to pull the plug on it. So yes, it may well not be different this time if Trump creates the pressure like Clinton, then gets bogged down in ••••talks••••. NSA Bolton might be our only hope. I’m highly skeptical and not in the Amen Corner just yet.
Studied NK too much in the past to be optimistic about this whole thing. I look at substance, not the optics or theatrics—from a purely institutional memory perspective.
The Norks are a Chinese proxy, and to a much lesser extent a Russian proxy. I don’t see either changing their way and fear another boondoggle.
I’m laughing because NONE of these reports have or are presenting what is/will be the North’s demands for achieving denuclearization. One of those demands will be the same demand it has made for 50+ years - it wants an end to the U.S.-South Korea military alliance and removal of U.S. troops from South Korea, as signed and sealed commitments BEFORE denuclearization can begin.
NK will try to string this out and get their goodies upfront and then break the deal like the other times. In no uncertain terms they have to be told total denuclearization within 60 days with verification and permanent verification force left in place to assure they do not try to restart and no goodies up front. Otherwise they can pound sand and we will wait for their total economic collapse.Trump should not show up until our negotiators are well on the way to sewing up the deal
