Op-Ed | Supporting America’s plan to lead on the moon
Space News ^ | 4/4/2018 | John Thornton

Posted on 04/05/2018 7:16:50 AM PDT by Elderberry

For nearly half a century, America has led some of the most complex missions with robotic landers throughout our solar system, including bold landings on Mars and asteroids. But most Americans are surprised to hear that since 1972 we haven’t had a crewed or robotic lander conduct science and exploration on the moon. Although NASA has placed the occasional orbiter around the moon and even intentionally impacted a spacecraft into the surface, the nation has not had a lander capable of advanced surface science and exploration since Apollo.

In retrospect, it’s striking that the global leader in space exploration went from safely landing and returning astronauts from the lunar surface to lacking the national capability to land even the smallest of payloads on the lunar surface for nearly 50 years. During this gap, our international competitors have pressed on. Most recently, Chinese landers and rovers have accessed the lunar surface, while numerous others have outlined their own near-term lunar plans. Where America once undeniably led in lunar science and exploration, other countries have stepped in to demonstrate new leadership on the moon.

Fortunately, over the last decade, a number of American companies have been working with NASA to develop robotic lunar lander systems with an eye towards capturing the emerging global market of small payloads. Governments, academia and the private sector have all demonstrated demand for affordable access to the surface of the moon through small lander services. As we prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of the first Apollo lunar landings, we’re on the cusp of an exciting return to our nearest planetary neighbor with the administration’s 2019 proposed budget for NASA. Through an affordable approach called the Lunar Exploration and Discovery Program, NASA can once again pursue new lunar frontiers with its own payloads on lander systems

Google is your friend.

https://sservi.nasa.gov/articles/nasa-looking-to-mine-water-on-the-moon-and-mars/

Again, you use the moon as a stepping stone or refueling station. It takes a lot of propellant to get anything into orbit around earth. If hydrogen and oxygen were being mined on the moon, then you could send a spacecraft there with an empty fuel tank, fill it up, and since you are now in a much lower gravity well, commence your trip to Mars or anywhere else with tons of fuel onboard to get you there and provide power etc...

What was the value of sending Columbus on his trip??? I think there’s value if only to establish mankind on another celestial body so that if we get clobbered by another comet the size of Delaware, that we don’t all die out as a species.

Uh; How does this 'fuel' GET to the Moon?

If hydrogen and oxygen were being mined on the moon...

'Tis a MIGHTY big IF!!

But; wouldn't this delivery have to use ANOTHER 'spacecraft' to carry it?

And wouldn't THAT have to be fueled on Earth?

I’m not all that indisposed to thinking about a pull_yourself_up_by_your_bootstraps scheme; but first I want to see what the boots are made of.

...that we don’t all die out as a species.

We all gonna die out individually; so who cares what the 'species' does?

Millions of creatures have gone extinct on earth before; yet it keeps on rolling along.

All the other bodies in THIS Solar System has no breathable atmosphere; so any Ark with the remnant of mankind (and other earthy kinda critters) would, by necessity, be a submarine.

In the last nearly 50 years since Americans first walked on the moon we haven’t done squat in exploring our nearest neighbor in space.

....

It’s a big lump of rock and sand almost identical to what we have here on Earth. Going there had inspirational value. That’s it.

Don’t we already have a National Park on the moon?

We sure do!

Make sure to get your Passport Book stamped by a ranger when you visit!

I can buy that... IF we search for a planet that can self-sustain human life. The moon and Mars ain’t it.

You have to learn to crawl before you can learn to walk. Pretty sure we aren’t going from 0 straight to Star Trek land.

Flat earthers taking over free republic. There is no proof of “wires” in any of that footage. Oh, and dishonestly using a scene transition from a highlights reel as proof of fakery? That’s dishonest in itself right there!

https://youtu.be/Yhr8NugDMPI?t=37s

Hmm, why would a flattie lie and present that footage as if it was supposed to be raw unedited footage that had a “green screen mistake” in it? Because they’re the ones who are dishonest pieces of shit.

Do you notice any wires on the guy floating by in the background between the 0:21 and 0:24 mark? I do.

The rest of the video is IMO a mixture of good evidence and dubious evidence.

There is a HUGE difference among the following claims:

1. The earth is flat

2. We have never been into space.

3. We have never been to the moon.

Point 1. Personally, I absolutely disagree with point 1. So I am definitely not a “flat earther”. The earth is provably (to anyone with a smidgen of scientific ability) spherical.

Point 2. I consider it to be 99% probable that we have been to space. I don’t believe that is the major point here, so I won’t elaborate and I’m not interested in arguing about it either way.

Point 3. Until a few weeks ago I would have regarded anyone who said we had not been to the moon as a total kook. Now I have deep suspicions. The video I referenced above is quite compelling. Certainly it is possible to fake a video that “proves” we did not go into space just as much as it is possible to fake one that says we did. I’d welcome a refutation of what I saw in the video at the link, particularly at the point mentioned. If we get beyond that, I’d like answers for a few more questions.

Another point: I notice that you post almost exclusively on threads that relate to Elon Musk/Tesla. I find it interesting that someone would create an account on FR, which is primarily a conservative political website, for the sole purpose of posting on a single non-political issue. Would you care to satisfy my curiosity as to why that is? Particularly when there are plenty of websites dedicated to science, space, engineering, and similar topics.

No, there are not. You are a liar posting a lying video I already debunked. I have developed tracking software for rocket launches and satellites, you have no clue who are you talking to and you are in no position to question my reasons for being on FR. We have been in space, ISS is real, you are an idiot.

Tesla stock is being shorted because the phony space program puppet show is over. It is time you pull your head out of your ass.

Wrong. Tesla’s stock has nothing to do with SpaceX, and their space program is very, very real. Suck on it:

Neil DeGrasse Tyson has absolutely nothing to do with SpaceX.
