Yes, This Is Going to Be Worse Than Watergate
The Daily Beast ^ | march 20th, 2018 | Michael Tomasky

Posted on 03/20/2018 12:12:04 PM PDT by Mariner

Something changed last weekend, did it not?

The firing of Andrew McCabe. The statement by Trump lawyer John Dowd to The Daily Beast’s Betsy Woodruff that Robert Mueller should end his probe soon. Donald Trump’s tweetstorm just after that, his first tweets mentioning Mueller by name along with promises by aides that more attacks are on the way. The amped-up speculation that Trump will fire Jeff Sessions and replace him with someone who hasn’t recused himself so that someone can fire Mueller.

Somewhere in there also came an official reassurance by Trump lawyer Ty Cobb that the president has no plans to fire Mueller. Right. That’s about as reassuring as the NCAA promising that all that cheating is a thing of the past.

The temperature’s rising. The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman reports that this president feels he really knows how to do this job now, and from here on in we’re going to see Trump unchained. So the Trump we’ve been seeing has been chained? God help us.

Where are we headed? If Trump fires Sessions and brings in whomever, and that person does fire Mueller, we will be in the midst of a major constitutional crisis. The standard line is “the worst since Watergate.” But this one is looking like it could be far worse than Watergate. Why?

Because in 1973, we had a Republican Party with some independent-minded lawmakers in it.

“If Trump fires Sessions and brings in whomever, and that person does fire Mueller, we will be in the midst of a major constitutional crisis. “

lolol...what a bunch of dim bulbs. We’ve been in a major constitutional crisis since Obama was ‘elected’. His apparatchiks are running a soviet style special counsel coup out the the DOJ thanks to that rat bastard, Jeff Sessions.

“He has a core, dedicated base of 62 million voters”

It’s a lot more then that now.

Have never seen an elected official work so hard to keep his promises.

He’s gotten stymied a lot, but that’s because of the incredible, unprecedented attacks on him.

But he’s beating that back. And soon, the big guns will be pointing at them.

Why should anyone obey the law if even our officials are above the law?

Seems to me that if there is an AG without a personal conflict, then the need for a special prosecutor disappears.

You are correct.

I don’t see why the justice Department can’t appoint a prosecutor to take up the IG report and absorb all the 450 lawyers into his prosecutorial team and then proceed to destroy the Criminal enterprise that is the democrat party

“One, Nixon was a crook”

I beg to disagree. As far as I am concerned the Congress should have been pinning medals on the chests of all who participated in Watergate.

They were, in fact, trying to keep a known Communist out of the White House!

We have been in the midst of a "major" constitutional crisis (is there any other kind?) since January 20, 2009, but the Chief Executive asserting authority over his subordinates does not make it worse - it makes it better.

And it should be worse than Watergate - for the Rats. It would be really good if the coup plotters ended up at the end of ropes.

What the author means is that it will be worse than the Inquisition or Soviet Show Trials.

They would still need evidence, even with the average Joe Blow. They have to show probable cause to investigate, and if they can’t it’s harassment and a violation of the 4th amendment.

The easy solution is to charge Muller with the many crimes he has committed. Throw him in jail and force him to post bond. At that point he will likely resign as special prosecutor.

If they can manufacture evidence against POTUS, they can manufacture it against anyone.

The left is delusional. The whole Mueller thing is an unconstitutional attempt by the deep state to save their own butts.

It is a favorite meme of the left that Watergate was " a constitutional crisis." It was not. The Constitution was never in doubt, never threatened or violated, never compromised. Liberal news columnists at the time loved the excitement of a crisis though, and pushed that story line to the max. Like most leftwing lies, it stuck and became part of the conventional wisdom.

Corruption is way bad and criminal, but by itself it is not an attack on the Constitution.

This thing should have been ended last year.

What is really odd is the Russian troll farm indictment. Evidently they stole some CC numbers and made FB posts. It has absolutely nothing to do with Trump. It seems to me that is something Mueller team should have passed off to DOJ/CIA for further investigation instead of painting a kill logo on their office door.
