Why We Should Lower the Voting Age to 16
The New York Times ^ | March 2, 2018 | Laurence Steinberg

Posted on 03/04/2018 9:25:53 AM PST by Trump20162020

The young people who have come forward to call for gun control in the wake of the mass shooting at their high school in Parkland, Fla., are challenging the tiresome stereotype of American kids as indolent narcissists whose brains have been addled by smartphones. They offer an inspiring example of thoughtful, eloquent protest.

Unfortunately, when it comes to electing lawmakers whose decisions about gun control and other issues affect their lives, these high schoolers lack any real power. This needs to change: The federal voting age in the United States should be lowered from 18 to 16.

Skeptics will no doubt raise questions about the competence of 16-year-olds to make informed choices in the voting booth. Aren’t young people notoriously impulsive and hotheaded, their brains not fully developed enough to make good judgments?

Yes and no. When considering the intellectual capacity of teenagers, it is important to distinguish between what psychologists call “cold” and “hot” cognition.

It appears Larry doesn’t take voting very seriously. That’s the problem with America these days. Our elections have become a joke. I don’t want to walk into a voting booth that has Tide Pod soap all over it. Get a job Larry! Why not have kindergarteners vote too? Oh sorry, they’re busy trying to figure out which gender they want to be.

It should be lowered to first graders. When these kids are made aware that it is THEIR money being spent left and right by the government, they will put a stop to it.

I was about to post my own comment and then saw that your comment says the same thing.

Don't confuse democRATS with facts or logic or reason.

The entire party seems to have a problem recognizing reality to begin with.

No, the shooter was a legal adult. The day you turn 18, things magically change. Scumhead was 19.

Teenager is nothing but a cultural term, and one that unheard of in many cultures.

The “teenage” word itself was not coined until the 1940’s. The concept of perpetual adolescence is much later than that.

The legal system makes no such definition. A person is a minor until 17 years, 364 days, then they reach the age of majority.

Conferring the awesome power of the vote on a 16 year old skull full of mush is absolutely stupid.

Representation without taxation? Come on Larry. You have to grow up some time. Besides, Nikolas Cruz was a “young people”, you jerk.

But they should be on mom and dad’s insurance until 26 and live in their basement into their 40s?

So let me get this straight: Lower voting age to 16 because kids are so smart and mature, raise gun purchase age to 21 because kids are stupid and immature?

Well put!

“No single women, non-homeowners allowed to vote AT ALL!”

As long as they don’t pass any laws that affect single women and non-property owners.

They will not be happy until they have recreated Lord of the Flies right here in the USA.

That would solve a lot of problems, including politicians sucking up to welfare leeches.

Never put it past the left to try and take advantage of a tragic situation to their benefit. We all saw this narrative coming. The glowing stories of how “smart” and more enlightened about guns these Parkland students have been numerous in the media. The Dems need new voters. If their access to illegals fails then lowering the voting age is another way of getting fresh millions of new voters.

“I had an economics teacher (long ago) sho was adamant that only people who paid income taxes should be allowed to vote - absolutely no one who received welfare.”

If I recall correctly, when the income tax was first instituted most folks didn’t have to pay it.

I once sent a letter to a young man of 18 who married a girl because she told him she was pregnant and magically lost the baby two weeks later.

I gave him some mature advice about getting it together, responsibility and taking charge of his family.

The girl wrote me back an extremely long text and said that as a “partial adult” she could make her own decisions.

What the heck is a “partial adult?”

Her behavior alone proved she wasn’t adult at all, not to mention that they were living in her parent’s basement.

No surprise, the marriage only lasted a few months.

So Laurence Steinberg would approve of lowering the draft age to 16...?

And then we could charge them with crimes as adults at 16 and hand down the death penalty to 16yr olds...

And suddenly he must be the only liberal to disapprove of the attack on Judge Moore for his alleged affinity for 16 yr olds?

Correct, and “Seventeen” magazine had a lot to do with it—capitalism at work.

We should also lower the drinking age to ten. By the time they reach driving age, it will be out of their system plus they would never wish to hang around ten year olds. Drunk driving would occur primarily on bicycles. A lot fewer highway deaths from DWI's. Right now, we time their access to drinking and driving to the same set of years which is asking for it.

And self loathers like Steinberg think no one under 21 should be allowed to buy a gun if at all. Why? lake of maturity, responsibility? And that wouldn't be true for a 16 year old with something so important as voting for the Leaders of the (for now) free world? We would have had a much more moderate Democratic Party and nary a Bernie Sanders in site had we left the voting age at 21 for all except the Military.

Steinberg is nothing more that a leftist POS dreaming of a one Party Socialist country we're he is calling the shots for how much gruel the Peasants will have on their plate that night.

didn't they try this in Argentina?....

I've enjoyed my 18yr and up voting rights...

under that age, they can't drive without special restrictions, they can't drink, they can't buy smokes, they can't vape, they can't join the military, they can't rent a car, they can't buy a gun...

the list of "can't s " goes on and on...

mainly they are not mature nor knowledgeable...

although I guess they know enough to get abortions and bc pills from planned parenthood, and to alter their sexual parts....
