Trump Wants to Arm Teachers. These Schools Already Do.

SIDNEY, Ohio — The 8-by-11-inch box sits atop a bookshelf in the district headquarters, as much a part of the office furniture as the manila folders, yearbooks and Webster’s dictionaries. Inside is a semiautomatic Glock handgun with extra magazines, equipment that education leaders here say will prevent this district from suffering the next schoolhouse tragedy.

Dispersed throughout the seven school buildings in this rural Ohio district outside of Dayton are dozens of biometric safes, tucked away discreetly in closets and classrooms, only accessible to a designated staff member whose fingerprint can open the box. A bulletproof vest is nearby, in an undisclosed location, fortified to protect against any bullet except one fired from an assault rifle.

“We can’t stop an active shooter, but we can minimize the carnage,” said John Scheu, the superintendent of Sidney City Schools.

...

For all the outcry, though, hundreds of school districts across the country, most of them small and rural, already have. Officials like those here in Sidney do not see the weaponry scattered through their schools as a political statement, but as a practical response to a potent threat.

...

Since 2013, in response to the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., legislation in state capitals across the country has sought to arm school staff. At least 10 states allow staff members to possess or have access to a firearm on school grounds, according to an analysis by the Education Commission of the States. And local districts have varied their approach to arming educators — in Ohio, guns are kept in safes; in Texas, they can be worn in holsters or kept in safes within immediate reach.

A Florida state legislative committee approved a $67 million “school marshal” program this week to train and arm teachers

This is the way. Just do it, don’t wait for DC. You’ll have to do it quietly though or loonie left will mobilize on your school’s grounds.

On body carry is the safest and most expedient method.

...and actually, this might be as good an example as any of the virtue of Federalism. Who says it's the federal government's place to do anything in the public schools in [fillinyourfavoritegungrabberstatehere]?

IOW leave arming school personnel up to the states according to their own values and then see how things go from there. Once people in those states start paying the consequences maybe they'll wisen up. That's a callous thing to say, yes, but someone show me where I'm wrong. People can move to or from anywhere as they please.

Those who wish to remain in a gun-free-zone state would be free to do so, and those who wish to deter psychotic people can move, or continue to live, in states that have deterrence in the schools.

After awhile, states that fail in this regard look to states that succeed and then change can happen.

I live in Sidney. While Sheriff Lenhart is a bit of publicity hound, don’t mess with him.

This headline subject caught my eye. How many of you remember... grew up in a society where there was no such thing as a gun free zone, or a need for a teacher to be armed to protect the kids in school? When teenagers and young adults knew what a gun was for and didn’t question or think about using it against a another person.... where the rifle hung across the back window of many pick ups and not a sign of anyone using it on another person... when abortion was not legal and when a computer was not to be had with all the bad in the world... and when parents held their kids responsible and when the Bible and Jesus was allowed in our schools!!!

Just wondered if I was the only one....

It is amazing to see those opposing this tactic because they fear for the child's safety, but at the same time don't mind, and are perfectly content, to have their children's brains and attitudes twisted by the same individuals.

I do agree that some teachers should not be armed, mostly the flaming lib radicals.

Our school didn’t need guns. We had Catholic nuns with big yardsticks.

However it is done, having the weapon available when needed is a good idea. Personally, I would opt for a gun safe wired into an alarm system much like fire extinguishers are currently handled. This would prevent the inevitable instance of a weapon being left unattended or misused. It would also get the police officials involved earlier as well as alerting others in the building on on the grounds. I would also suggest looking at using rifles in lieu of handguns for accuracy and range. Something in the 30 caliber range would be ideal for defensive use in a populated environment.

I volunteered to the DOE to study Isreal’s educational policies at no cost, except room and board. Have never gotten a response from the slackards.
