What prevents the president from ordering / offering armed protection for all schools?

He should declare a national emergency.

Not a federal issue. I assume you are being sarcastic. One guy - who is in custody - does not a federal emergency make...

No President should have that kind of power.

GREAT IDEA! We’ll put the TSA in charge of it.

I agree. We need more nut control. Not more gun control.

My community tore down the old high school about five years ago and replaced all the old buildings with ONE BIG BUILDING of several stories that looks and functions like a prison. You can get in the front door but after that, you have a secured entrance manned by guards who are armed. The school has its own school police cars, too. That’s the only way to get into the school complex which is one big building and BTW, the windows do NOT open and they’re bulletproof.

Good idea.

“During this state of emergency, no state or local government shall restrict gun ownership by law-abiding citizens. All existing restrictions are hereby suspended.”

No, the president shouldn’t and can’t do more. There is no “national emergency” on this issue. Just as california wants to govern itself, florida will and should do the same. The governor can take certain steps. Each school district can hire armed security guards to protect the school area, just like every large building in ny city does.

“The Feds can’t do anything...”

And thus they did ...nothing. FBI, what are they here for except be assholes to Republican presidential candidates.

No way. It’s not a Federal issue.

Hitlery Clinton would have loved to have that kind of power.

States should handle this. People who live near and love the children should be responsible for their safety.

Now, if the states wanted to do something like this, or even better, individual school systems, I’d be all over it.

But, one doesn’t make a law over an anomaly.

A few years ago, I had a meeting with my state rep over homeschooling issues. They introduced a bill to make home educators register with the state of Michigan.

I asked him what got the whole thing started and he actually told me that it was the result of a phone call another legislator got from some lady who didn’t like the way her nieces were being home schooled.

I told him that I was shocked and disgusted that he would sign on to making a law affecting tens of thousands of people just because of an unproven essentially anonymous claim of one individual.

I was just getting started.

I told him that if there’s a problem, refer the issue to social services. He and the state have no business knowing I even exist let alone telling me how to raise my children.

I then pointed him to the 19% graduation rate in Detroit Public Schools and told him that WAS under his purview and that is a complete and utter failure that he had done noting about it.

Kind of left him stuttering.

I’ve got a better idea

How about the FBI being relegated strictly to helping local law enforcement by simply handling the info part of it, like the gun reg database and national crime labs, national crime records etc. No investigating, no ops, no raids.

They could also handle interstate transport of federal criminals and defendants.
