"Shifting the tax burden from income to consumption is absolutely the right thing to do for the economy.

I fully support a Fed Gax Tax hike over additional borrowing. It's the responsible thing to do.

I love regressive taxation."

I thought toll roads paid for infrastructure. You use a certain road, you pay for using it.

I don't think making everybody, irregardless of where they live or which roads and bridges they actually use, pay 25 cents extra for every single gallon of gas they buy to pay for roads, highways and bridges they never use, and even roads and bridges not in their own states, is right. That is more socialism on top of all the other socialism we already got.

How about stop giving billions and billions of dollars to foreign governments of nations who hate us in an attempt to buy their friendship and use those billions and billions on state infrastructure for the benefit of the taxpayers who coughed up those billions to begin with.

This is President Trump. Propose high tax, dims say no to tax. Trump comes back later when dims propose a tax and reminds everyone dims did not want a tax. Plus maybe he wants a small tax increase and by stating big he sets the tone for negotiation. Read WIN BIGLY by Scott Adams.

No problem so long as the funds raised are used to fix roadways where those drivers drive. No diversion into bikeways, rail, etc.

Whoops, typed in those calculations a little too quickly. Actually, the hit is more like $240 per pickup per year. That’s not too bad, but the symbolism will be a real killer. I expect a gas tax increase, but perhaps a nickel a gallon at the most, costing about $50 (or under) per vehicle per year.

>> There goes the additional money people are seeing in their paychecks.

2 gallons/day amounts to $15/month, $180/year.

>> Axios is BS. Period.

Axios is Comcast. NBC is Comcast, MSNBC is Comcast.

You think the refinery pays taxes?

No, refineries don't pay taxes. People pay taxes. Where would you get a notion that a refinery pays taxes?

Let local county ans state tax money on gas be used EXCLUSIVELY for roads.

I'm with you that the funds should not be diverted from roads at the state and local level.

However, we are talking about funds for federal highways and bridges. And the same can be said for those funds, they should go exclusively to maintain where cars and trucks benefit.

All that said, the fed tax has not been raised in 20 years. Where should the money come from?

Here's a novel way of looking at it. Why don't we "redistribute" the tax funds the gov. has already sucked out of the taxpayer to pay for infrastructure instead of soaking the taxpayers even more.

When I see a headline which starts Scoop: Trump, my first question is "one scoop or two"?

Multiple states have higher state taxes than California.

See post 22.

One time 6usd charge to all registered road vehicles would cover the 1.5 trillion dollars.

You’re off by two orders of magnitude.

That would only be $1.5 billion.

I remember when the Republicans were the party of low taxes and fiscal responsibility, or at least said that they were. Now there isn't any pretense of being that anymore.

There's taxes and then there's taxes.....as of now the Fed gas taxes were being abused and then "supplemented" by higher income taxes, which were also being wasted/misused. If Trump gets his way, the whole deal will be more economical and end up with a "balanced ecosystem" as far as not being able to hide/funnel monies for leftist uses.

Proper taxes, properly executed would make a huge difference in all our lives.
