Scoop: Trump endorses 25-cent gas tax hike
Axios ^ | February 14th, 2018 | Jonathan Swan

President Trump endorsed a 25-cent gas tax hike to pay for infrastructure at a White House meeting this morning with senior administration officials and members of Congress from both parties, according to two sources with direct knowledge. Trump also said he was open to other ways to pay for infrastructure, according to a source with direct knowledge.

Reality check: Trump’s gas tax idea appears dead on arrival. Republicans aren’t about to hike taxes for the Trump voters driving their pickup trucks to work every day. It’s a regressive tax and in Republicans’ minds would undo some of working and middle class tax cuts they just passed.

Shifting the tax burden from income to consumption is absolutely the right thing to do for the economy.

I fully support a Fed Gax Tax hike over additional borrowing. It's the responsible thing to do.

I love regressive taxation.

There goes the additional money people are seeing in their paychecks.

I agree with you, but this isn’t going to happen. The Federal contribution to the Trump infrastructure plan is only $200 billion out of $1.5 trillion. There should be plenty of revenue to cover that $200 billion out of fuel taxes at the current level.

Well, you could always raise taxes “on the rich”.

Fine - but funds can’t be used for bike paths, trails and other green garbage. Must be used strictly for highways, bridges, and major roads.

Seriously, giving people back their tax money with one hand while taking it away from them with the other makes sense to you?

“Regressive” = “Flat” = “Fair”

Drive more efficient vehicles, carpool, plan your trips — these are all ways to minimize these taxes.

People on welfare do not pay income tax. They do have to pay sales/gas taxes.

I am for consumption taxes over income taxes.

“Seriously, giving people back their tax money with one hand while taking it away from them with the other makes sense to you?”

Consumption taxes over income taxes always make sense to me.

In 100% of cases, real and imagined.

Though I am a proponent of reducing spending by at least 1/2, along with the tax burden...I am also a realist and know that won’t happen.

If more money is needed for interstates and roads, what is the best way to raise those funds?

It has been 20 years since the federal excise tax was last increased.

The excise tax is collected at the refinery and is by far the most efficient point at which to impose and collect a federal tax to pay for roads, highways and bridges.

What would you propose? No you specifically, everyone reading this question.

If the US could minimize income tax and utilize sales tax instead, all welfare, gifts, and unreported illegal monies get taxed.

Why do you want those three monies to be tax-free while only your income gets taxed? Are you daft?

Then perhaps the best approach would be to repeal the income tax altogether and replace it with a consumption tax. Not that I will live long enough to see it, but I would favor a Fair Tax over the monstrosity we have now (and seem hell-bent on continuing to make it even worse).

Ha ha ha. Without strong lockbox safeguards this revenue will be collected and repurposed to 'pogrums' for gibsmedats, illegals, and fairies.

It’s Axios, and unless I hear it directly from Trump’s mouth that he endorses a 25 cent tax hike on gas I call BS.
