U.S. federal workers worry about government shutdown

Thousands of federal workers faced uncertainty about the status of their jobs and paychecks after U.S. Senate leaders failed to reach an agreement to end a government shutdown before the work week begins on Monday.

“This is incredibly stressful,” said Jessica Klement, vice president at the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, which represents more than 20,000 workers.

“Essential employees must report to work without knowing when they’ll be paid next,” she said. “Non-essential employees will be forced to stay home without pay, not knowing if back pay will be provided.”

Some employees may not have received notice of their status on Friday, she added, so they could be going into work on Monday morning only to be sent home again.

There is no official tally of how many would be off work this time. But local economies could suffer in communities where thousands of non-essential personnel are likely to be off work, from Norfolk, Virginia, and Fayetteville, North Carolina, to Lakewood, Washington, and Oceanside, California.

RE: U.S. federal workers worry about government shutdown

No they don’t. It’s a free paid vacation.

That’s right, it is a vacation for the 15% of the federal workforce affected.

I lived thru the 2013 shutdown, and others before, in DC. There was no more non-sensical thing than to shutdown the govt, send the govt employees home where they did no work from home (in fact they were specifically warned against it!) . . . and then when the govt opened up these same employees got paid for doing nothing while at home and didn’t get charged leave either.

Agree with you entirely, don’t pay them period and see how fast this stupidity ends.

My son - a Navy vet and VERY conservative - just a year and a a half ago - started working for the Dept of Labor. He had off to take his two kids to the doctor today but he was told he has to work instead. He did not complain. He just recognizes that it is what it is. Most of the guys he works with are all vets and many are younger and most conservative.
He considers himself blessed to have excellent hardworking coworkers. We can’t say that for a lot of govt workers.

Don't they get paid on the 1st and 15th? If so, it's not even an issue until Feb 1. Also, if they could please let us known when the last time they weren't given back pay for time not worked, we'd all appreciate that information.

The Govies do. Us contractors, the ones that do 95% of the work, have to use up leave. . . or Leave Without Pay. . .

Government contractors will not get back pay. Most contractors around here are former military whose skills often only translate into the government jobs around MD and DC. After the last shutdown, several lost their jobs. (Especially if they worked for smaller companies because they couldn’t absorb the loss.)
Also, the businesses that support fed workers lose money.

If it does not end soon, women will not be allowed to vote anymore, children will starve, blacks will be re-enslaved and dogs and cats will live together!

I wonder if now would be a good time for President Trump’s cabinet to contemplate another large round of layoffs?

“Us contractors, the ones that do 95% of the work, have to use up leave”

Does the shutdown mean you contractors receive less contract money from the government? If not then you’re getting screwed.

In normal course federal jobs are all upside and no downside. Its impossible to fire them. Some downside shows and everyone is supposed to be up in arms on their behalf?
Screw that.

To my knowledge, a government contractor is not a government employee. They are part of an entity that provides a service to the government for a contracted fee.

There may be civil service temporary employees that may be impacted as "non-essentials" but they are not contractors.

Is there another category of employee or condition of employment that I am not aware of that is called a government contractor?

I doubt this is true. We have a fed gov employee in the family and he isn’t concerned at all. This is all BS.

(By the way, he is in law enforcement, so he actually contributes.)

I meant people who work for the government as contractors.
