Once Erdogan started courting the Iranians and Russia, they no longer showed any commitment to NATO. His only aim is to reestablish a caliphate with him as the head.

Iran, Turkey, and Iraq cooperate in keeping what at one time was Kurdistan split among the three countries. Yet the Kurds are the one strong element in the Middle East that is opposed to Sunni and Shiite terrorism.

Erdogan is not so stupid as to be unaware that he's pissed off all of Turkey's allies, and is basically dead meat on a stick. Russia has him by the nuts, and everyone there knows it but is polite enough to not bring it up.

His first attempt at building a common market with Iran and Syria (but excluding Iraq, which was in chaos) was pointless and hopeless, as he learned the hard way. Iran took advantage of the relationship and destroyed most of Erdogan's regional policy. And now Iran has a budding Bomb program and more money.

When Assad started dismantling Syria and blaming everyone else (the Hillary of the middle east), the Turks and Iranians were backing different paramilitary groups, but Iran also had troops on the ground to keep its boot on Assad's neck.

Iranian intervention proved both expensive and unpopular at home, and when Lurch came by with an abject surrender by the US for the Iranian mullahcracies war crimes, and a big check, the Russians, uh, rushed in, and the Iranians saw that as a golden opportunity to get the hell out of the quagmire. Now Russia's mired instead, Turkey's paramilitary allies are long gone, and there are four different policies (Turkey's, Russia's, Syria's and Iran's) toward the Kurds.

So, while every square foot of land from the eastern end of the Med to the Persian Gulf is in continuous turmoil with no prospect that it will stop soon, President Trump announces the embassy move, Israel and the US get on the same page regarding Iran (but don't discuss what that is), the new Saudi ruler rounds up the rogue elements who operate their own private foreign policy out of their oil fortunes, and the last of the regional big three, Egypt, is in no shape to threaten beyond its borders.

Lemme guess...you liked him better when he was supporting Mo Morsi and ISIS.
