BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union’s trade tsar has no idea what Donald Trump will tell his audience at the World Economic Forum in Davos next week, but she is clear what the EU’s message to the U.S. president will be.
America is shooting itself in the foot by withdrawing from global leadership on trade, Cecilia Malmstrom, the 49-year-old Swede who has served as Europe’s trade commissioner for the past three years, told Reuters.
Under Malmstrom’s direction, the EU has juggled a dizzying array of trade talks over the past year. In July it clinched a preliminary deal with Japan. And early this year it hopes to seal agreements with Mexico and the Latin American Mercosur bloc.
The retreat of the United States under Trump has played a big role in this push, Malmstrom says. Countries around the world are desperate for new trading partners, and the EU, confident again after years of economic crisis and Britain’s vote in 2016 to leave the bloc, has eagerly filled the gap.

Yeah they don’t need to trade with us. OK. And how were we “leading” before by going along with everything? On the heels of Brexit and a lot of other resistance, these EU types are deathly afraid of what’s to become of them. Too bad they decided to “trade” in Muslim refugees.
We ALREADY lost on trade. I have traveled to the EU more than a few times in the last 10 years and barely have I seen any American goods in their shopping stores. The Brexit guys were quite correct. The EU make you pay more while being a member.
Stupid woman. America first is not Isolationism. We aren’t going to be the Worlds piggy bank anymore under Trump, but Socialists such as this stupid woman can’t get that through their heads. It’s what’s behind the eyes that counts. Unfortunately for the Socialists that area is limited.
Leadership or just being the chump? Sure we'll give away everything just for the sake of having a deal. I'm glad to see that era at least pause for a few years.

What an idiot. America First is a leadership position on trade.
That’s why our stock market keeps setting records.
Meanwhile, capital inflows to the US are surging and unemployment is dropping like a rock.
Assuming the purpose of trade policy is the betterment of national wealth and the wealth of the citizenry, we have turned a corner and are headed in the right direction.
And we will bury our competitors.
The reason for this is that Mercantilism WORKS. That’s why the entire world practices it.
There is no “Free Trade” and there never has been. It has never existed.
Here in the US it’s a euphemism for the looting and plunder of nation’s Capital Stock under the guise of some lofty principle that has never been proven, or even tried.
It’s as real as “Whirled Peas”.
But now that the US has awakened the entire world shudders in fear.
Europe, if you want to sell your Volvo’s, Audies, Mercedes, etc. then don’t give the USA the bird.
Pres. Trump is going down in history as the greatest leader of FAIR trade in modern history. His re-negotiations of NAFTA alone will make me happy. Too bad Congress doesn't just repeal that awful treaty. I was so against that from the start and I was right in my concerns.
Ross Perot was also correct about the "sucking sounds" of jobs leaving America" from NAFTA. It happened, but now they're coming back due to Trump.

Reading a few paragraphs in is all you have to do to know how right Trump is. And how screwed Europe is, especially after the corporate tax cuts.
The part about China assuming global leadership on trade at last year’s form and then actually cracking down on trade. Beautiful.
Here’s a question - of the EU is so great why aren’t they the leaders on global trade?
