Where to Move? Time to Retire and Find a New Life.
01.15.18 | chickensoup

The kids are grown and gone. I live in the Northeast. I am looking to move to a small city or town or village. I am healthy, happy and adaptable.

I would prefer a place that has a conservative base. Every location on the lists of best places to move are leftist s***holes.

I am hoping for a place with four seasons, albeit, not as severe as the northeast. Elevations are fine, beauty is important, and so is the need of good, friendly people.

Any ideas?

Kentucky gets a bad rap but I love it. People here got wise to the Democrat’s lies and the Rats will probably not get any power back (just stay away form Louisville). You would be amazed what property values are here and taxes aren’t bad. Fortunately the state isn’t viewed as a new age hot spot like North Carolina either.

There are a lot of friendly small towns just east of the Rockies, an area called The Front Range, in CO.

Just look at a map and follow I-25 to find them.

Same is true on The Western Slope, which is the far west of CO.

A year & a half ago we moved to Emmett, Idaho - about 25 miles North of Boise. It’s in Gem County, the smallest county in ID. Population is 6k for the city & 14k for the entire county. It’s dry, pretty cold in the winter & pretty hot in the summer. Not too much of a problem if you’re retired like we are. Scenery is lovely - we are surrounded by low hills, with Squaw Butte an impressive feature. (A friend of a friend has joked that there are only 3 roads into the valley & all could easily be held in the event of a zombie apocalypse.) Housing prices are very reasonable. Taxes are low. People are friendly & conservative. We are quite happy here.

Since I see you’re a longtime FReeper I can in good conscience recommend North Texas. The weather is actualy fairly mild except for July and August. Good medical infrastructure. And a great hub airport to take you wherever you might want to travel. You just have to watch out for concentrations of Texas democrats who are a virulent breed. “Keep Austin Weird” actually means Keep Austin Democrat!

How about coming to Los Angeles? I could use some help at ground zero in the culture battles. You may no longer be healthy, happy or adaptable after spending some time here but the stories you’ll be able to tell your grandkids about your time in the “war”....priceless. :)

My wife and I made many plans for retirement but the one thing we never thought about was moving. To me that is one of the great regrets in life.

We actually got serious about retirement about 20 years before it actually occurred and we took steps to make sure it was a smooth transition and we would be able to live a comfortable life.

In the years before retirement we made many road trips around our great nation, but for some reason it did not occur to me we should be looking for a new home.

I would suggest anyone planning on retirement to include the possibility of moving to a new area.

Come on down to the Texas Hill Country. We only have two seasons (summer and not summer), but you will never have to shovel snow again.

Actually we do have winter, just for never more than a day or so at a time. Yesterday it was sunny and in the 60s. Tomorrow it is not supposed to get above the mid-20s with possible sleet or snow. By this weekend it will be back in the 60s again.

Do some reading up on Loveland, Colorado. We have lately had four seasons two or three times..... The elevation is fine and quite near the really high hills and mountains. Very Veteran friendly and conservative enough that there aren’t many noisy liberals around to made your head hurt.
Well come on in !

Why does Kentucky get a bad rap. Sounds like a nice state.

Forgot to add: Central Time TV programming. It can get harder to stay awake as you age.

Avoid small college towns...usually more left that they first appear. Exception may be Oxford MS. Avoid blue states, invariably higher taxes. First check crime rates and concealed carry regulations . Best bets: Florida, Tennessee and Texas.
