BOSTON (AP) - A Boston police detective is set to be sentenced Thursday for lying to federal officials so he could take his gun on planes during personal trips and allow a friend to avoid airport security.

Sgt. Detective Bruce Smith faces up to a year of probation under the terms of a plea deal. He has also agreed to resign from the department and pay a $7,500 fine.

The 28-year veteran of the force was charged last year with falsely telling Transportation Security Administration officials that he was on official police business and was authorized to carry his firearm. Prosecutors allege he flew armed on about 28 trips from Boston’s Logan International Airport.

So, would you or I get a just a year of probation and a mere $7,500 fine if we did any of these things:
  1. Lying to federal officials at least 28 times
  2. Allow Helping a friend avoid airport security.

Bet we'd be in jail.

“the first thing they do when coming to a house and before any questions”

Yes, I thought so. Thanks for the clarification.

The 28-year veteran of the force was charged last year with falsely telling Transportation Security Administration officials that he was on official police business and was authorized to carry his firearm.

He thought he was special and that the laws didn't apply to him.

He thought wrong.

I don't have a problem with cops carrying on personal trips.

I am curious about how he could allow the friend to avoid airport security. Not a well written article by the WT.

All cops should be allowed to carry on flights.

Do I like getting pulled over for spirited riding on the Duc? No.

Do I want to fly on an airliner knowing armed cops are aboard? Same answer as "Are you a turtle?"

Hmmmm...28 years on the BPD should get him a pension of about $75k/yr...if not more.Rat Party politicians have made certain that “public servants” here in the Gay State are very well compensated. That's why the only times there are vacant positions are retirement (typically after 20 years) and death.

“Don’t know about the bed part, but the dirty cops did shoot and kill their 2 labs.”

It all depends on how the labs were behaving, doesn’t it?

“I don’t have a problem with cops carrying on personal trips.”

I wouldn’t if law abiding citizens could do the same. What makes cops so special?

I don't have a problem with law abiding Americans carrying either. The more the merrier. If Diane Feinstein can carry we all should be able to.

9/11 would not have been as deadly if there had been Americans carrying on those jets. Might not have been pretty but a lot less loss of innocent life.

Well congratulations. You, the MSM, CAIR, and the University Elites all eagerly latch on to the inevitable one story per week of outrageous Police responses. Hundreds of thousands of police responses occur each and every week, across the entire country, and you and your ilk eagerly await the “bad one” as reported gleefully by the MSM, to condemn ALL of our police (or our Military, or Capitalism, of Christianity) to condemn our whole evil society. Well, you are in good company. For you, I HIGHLY recommend Al Sharptons N.A.N., Muslims CAIR, and and University of California Website, as they share your outrage.

Police should be encouraged to carry their guns on air flights.

I’ll bet this may happen under Trump.
