Struggling Subway is now facing a franchisee revolt
NY Post ^ | 12/13/17 | Josh Kosman

.....The struggling sandwich chain has seen customer traffic plummet a whopping 25 percent over the past five years....

In a Nov. 30 memo to franchisees that revealed the stomach-churning drop, Subway’s owners promised $25 million to boost marketing this spring for the company’s 44,000 locations and to bring back a limited-time, $4.99 footlong sandwich promotion.....

....the crucial footlong deal — aimed squarely at the McDonald’s dollar menu — is in danger because of a revolt by franchise owners, who fret that doubling down on discounts will further shave their already thin profits.

More than 400 of them have signed a petition protesting the two-month footlong deal that’s slated to begin in January....

I used to consider Subway for lunch.... then Subway began to suck up to the Obama administration.

That was essentially the end of my relationship with Subway.

Get out of politics and make me a samich.

Since Subway did the Michelle Oblowme marketing thing, I’ve not stepped one foot into any of their locations. Which really sucks for the franchisees. Not the fault of franchise owners but they take the blow for stupid corporate politically driven decisions.

They’ve gotten too expensive. Footlong for $5? Cool. For $8?
No.

Their food is tasteless garbage & there seems to be a location on every other block.

The meat portions keep getting smaller. Pretty soon they will just use a ‘meat’ spray to flavor the bread. I don’t go any more.

Their chicken sandwich is about 60 percent chicken.
No one is saying what the rest of it is...

In PA, Wawa convenience stores / gas stations are eating Subway’s lunch.

Faster, much better, and cheaper. Can’t compete with that.

I really like their breakfast steak and egg white sandwich, but I’m minimizing carbs and I just don’t do bread much anymore.

This discount gimmick is what really messed up franchise Burger King owners in Germany all peeved. The franchise HQ’s was pumping out discount coupons every single month to get more people to stop in and buy BK products. But the franchise owners weren’t seeing any profits with the increased sales. The franchise big guys were making the profits off selling burgers, buns, etc....to the individual franchise shop operations.

Subway is basically repeating the same formula.

I used be a twice-a-week person at Subway, and I think they still have a good decent product.

Once you get customer hooked on discounts, they expect them eternally and will not buy without them.

Remember these guys from a couple years back (Jos Banks)? Who bought there at regular prices?

I don’t know how anyone can eat that s**t.

Are there no good sub shops across America?
Or am I just blessed that I live in the northeast, where there’s one on practically every other street corner??
