I mean: Shouldn't all of the men in ancient times who consistently "misread the signals," wouldn't take "no" for an answer, and proceeded full speed ahead despite the female's objections have eventually been bred out of the gene pool, leaving only perfect gentleman capable of picking up on the slightest negative nuances and beating a hasty retreat?

I suspect going where the good women go is harder for a busy lawyer, hence the resort to a dating website. I’m in a much different position, married for many years and not looking, but I’ve been young, rich, and single, and actively working not to make my precise financial status obvious (while also making it clear that I had a comfortable, steady income).
If they can get a man without sex, then perhaps they would prefer it. If the only way to keep a man interested in having them around is via sex, then that might change their attitude.
I'm pretty sure that Donald Trump has a sex life with Melania. Anthony Quinn managed to father a couple of kids, one at age 78, and another at 82, with his girlfriend (who was 33 when she had the younger kid).

First of all, there used to be arranged marriages, for peoples all over the world, so whether one wanted to or not...they got married.
Prostitution was not outlawed and Temple ( in Ancient Greece ) priestess had sexual congress with men, as a sacrament.
Then there is the JUS PRIMAE NOCTIS/DROIT DU SEIGEUR of Medieval times, when the feudal lords got "first dibs" on all of the peasant virgins, especially on their wedding day.
Add to the above, was the "KNIGHTLY RULES OF CONDUCT", where any knight could rape/have his way with any girl of a lower class, but he had to be circumspect with girls and women of his class and above.
Times change, but some men have always been cads and bounders!
Amongst the European aristos ( and also in wealthy American homes ) the male head of the the house and some of the sons, dalliances with maids and governesses used to be ( and in some cases still is! ) pretty common.
OTOH, what I was referring to is that in recent times, in America, old manners, morals, and rules have broken down and so, neither sex seem to pick up on/see correctly "interest" signals.
And what was once NEVER seen as "abuse" or harassment ( a man telling a woman that she looked nice, smelled good, was pretty...whatever ), now is, by some idiot females.
But yes...men SHOULD always take "NO" for an answer and back off/stop whatever they are doing! OTOH,many of today's girls/women don't know how or when to say "NO"!
And then there are the girls/women who now claim "rape" when they initiated something and then are sorry afterwards, make false claims, and/or, like the males in their age contingents, have absolutely NO idea what dating and courting is supposed to be like, so never figure out what the "signals" mean and perhaps haved no idea how ro send them.
