Al Franken Should Resign Immediately: Democrats Credibility On Sexual Harassment Is At Stake
Slate ^ | 3 hours ago | By Mark Joseph Stern

On Thursday morning, Los Angeles radio host Leeann Tweeden wrote in a disturbing article alleging that Sen. Al Franken sexually harassed her on a 2006 USO tour. According to Tweeden, Franken coerced her into “rehearsing” a kiss for a skit, then forcefully stuck his tongue in her mouth. She also provided a photograph of Franken appearing to grope her while she slept.

There is no rational reason to doubt the truth of Tweeden’s accusations, no legitimate defense of Franken’s actions, and no ambiguity here at all: Franken should resign from the Senate immediately. Democrats should call for him to step down straightaway. This revelation is a test of the Democratic Party’s consistency, honesty, and decency. If Democrats wish to preserve whatever moral standing they have today, they must exhort Franken to leave the Senate, with no hesitation or reservations.

The hypocrisy of Franken’s reaction is galling. Following the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the senator wrote an impassioned Facebook post declaring that sexual harassment is “appalling” and “far too common.” He added that it “takes a lot of courage to come forward, and we owe them our thanks.” Franken then praised Gretchen Carlson for writing about “the disappointing responses women often face when they go public both embolden harassers and encourage victims to stay silent.”

Yet another self-proclaimed defender of women’s rights has revealed himself to be a misogynistic fraud. Franken’s ardent promotion of gender equality on the Senate floor is rendered meaningless in the face of his disgusting conduct.

The RATs are more than willing to sacrifice Silly Al if it gives them more leverage on Moore.

Democrats don't need any more leverage on Moore, McConnell does. If Franken resigns then the chorus of Republicans demanding Moore withdraw or, if elected, resign will grow. It'll give them all the excuse they need to expel him if he doesn't.

He won’t resign or be forced out.

That would open the door for more current Senators being forced out too.
Does anyone think Franken is the only one in the Senate? No he is not.

They would form a circular firing squad and let the games begin!

Fake outrage. There's no political risk if Franken leaves. Same deal with the "sudden" "I believe Juanita Broderick" crap.

That won’t happen, or Biden would be toast also.

And you think Franken is the only current Senator that is a sexual harasser?
Expelling Franken would open up a nightmare for both Mitch and Chuckie.

Franken isn’t going anywhere.

The thing is, only Franken can kick Franken out of the Senate. (I know, the Senate could vote to expel him with a 2/3 majority). The party could put pressure on him, but why should he volunteer to go? What’s in it for him? Any moves on the Senate’s part would just lead to more delays on doing any of the things (like confirming judges) that the Senate really needs to get doing.

I hope he stays. It just points out the hypocrisy of the holier-than-thou democrats. Republicans won’t have a prayer of getting his seat.

Most Senators are too smart to allow photographs.

Franken isn’t going anywhere.

I don't disagree with anything you say, just pointing out that if Franken were shamed into resigning then that would give McConnell additional leverage he needs to force out Moore.

Exactly. I bet we lose 10 senators before this plot line runs its course. And good riddance. Nobody is above the law. We are better than this. We have 300 million people in the US and I bet there are plenty who are not depraved perps.
