McCain hits Trump where it hurts, attacking ‘bone spur’ deferments in Vietnam

McCain, whose status as a war hero Trump publicly and controversially doubted as a 2016 presidential candidate, appeared to retaliate in kind against the president in a C-SPAN interview about the Vietnam War airing Sunday night. In the interview, McCain pointed to wealthy Americans who were able to get out of being drafted into service in the conflict in which he spent years as a prisoner of war. And he pointed to a very specific type of deferment which Trump just happened to use.

“One aspect of the conflict, by the way, that I will never ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest-income level of America, and the highest-income level found a doctor that would say that they had a bone spur,” McCain said. “That is wrong. That is wrong. If we are going to ask every American to serve, every American should serve.”

We had a guy develop bone spurs. He wanted to stay in and even asked for a surgery to removed them. Nope, they put him out. Not enough Orthopedic surgeons available at that time.

I developed a bone spur when I had 15 years in the USAF. No one ever mentioned putting me out. I went on to retire at 20 years. I was in a critical career field. Maybe that was the reason.
My high school classmate, at the height of the Vietnam war, was rejected by the Army, due to flat feet.

when I went through processing before basic there were three of us that were under weight by about 2-3 pounds. we were instructed to go to lunch eat a much as we could and make sure not to go to the bathroom till after we were weighed.

I don’t know what started that incident on McCain’s aircraft carrier. I do not rule out McCain being more involved than they stated for the record. I don’t rule out him not being involved either.

Since this country hasn't fought a war that was worth fighting since WWII, I'd say we are very lucky that Trump didn't serve. Had he done so, we might well have been denied his stellar intellect and patriotism now. I take no pleasure in saying that, given the exemplary service of tens of thousands, if not millions of good, patriotic, decent American young people who were pressed into battle in Vietnam, and the Middle East for absolutely no effing good reason by politicians who, by and large made sure that there children were exempted. And it angers me to this day how this country treated these young people when they came home, particularly with respect to Vietnam. The Vietnam Wall on the Capitol Mall that chronicles our dead shows for all who see it, the shame of our DemoRAT politicians who fecklessly got us involved there. My cousin is there, and the only peace his parents have is that they are both now themselves dead and can be at rest next to him. In a perverse way JFK got what he deserved. It's just too bad LBJ and Robert McNamara didn't get the same treatment, the worthless old bastards! Our war dead would be resting easier it they had.
