Why is gun ownership so high in the US?

After the horrific shooting in Las Vegas, many people ask why is gun ownership so high in the U.S.? That's an honest question. Maybe you've asked that of yourself or have had it pose to you by a liberal friend as I have. There are many reasons, and I'd like to touch of a few of the less mentioned ones. And no, they have nothing to do with hunting and target shooting.

Grew up around guns all my life. My father taught me to shoot at 7 using a sawdust pile as a backstop. Our Boy Scout Troop had a rifle range in the church basement despite being in a heavily populated city. Range consisted of a 1” steel plate angled at 45 degrees that forced bullets into sand at the base. Try putting in a range like that today. My high school had a rifle range. On New Years Eve, several veterans in the neighborhood would fire their .45s into the ground instead of setting off fireworks. Crime in our neighborhood was almost non-existent and murder in the city was a rare event and frowned on by the entire community. Today I own guns for a variety of reasons but none of my neighbors know I even have a gun. That’s how much times have changed, that I must hide gun ownership from neighbors for fear of their criticism and loose lips that might make my house a target for thieves. I long for the times I grew up in where the neighborhood was filled with veterans and civilians who owned and knew how to use guns.

Why have we had a gun buying spree like no mans business since 2001 is the question.

It has only one answer.....have you taken a serious look at Dems and the left lately? Just look at what they are doing to this country with mass invasion to destruction of our rights and call everything good and moral evil. Why do you think the left is so desperate to take guns away. Americans have quietly bought enough guns and ammo to supply every army in the word since 2001 and sales this year are looking like they are going to be the second biggest sales year. Nobody if feeling safe yet. Gee, thanks antifa and BLM.

Because free men are armed while slaves and subjects are not.

"You helped, apparently, by contributing to the “gun culture”. Or something. Me too."

Metoo. I'm trying to hold up my end.

A corollary to the “Because we can” theory is “We are watching what is happening in Europe with the EU becoming a totalitarian entity and their importation of millions of third country nationals who tend to have Sudden Jihad Syndrome.”

That would be nice.
My answer to “how much ammo is enough?” is “enough to wear out every barrel you have.” Wear ratings would help gauge how much to buy.

Same here! Background check yesterday took just 5 minutes...on a weekday!

A new GUN store opened up and I went in to meet them.
Very nice and comfortable store, treated me like an old friend. They’re trying to put together a bulk reloading order for their new customers!!

I try hard to keep my SA $ local.

'Way out here, in the Piney Woods boondocks of East Texas -- when I read the title -- I unconsciously reached down and patted the stock of the little beauty that resides beside my recliner...

Who was it who said, "Happiness is a warm gun..."?

Well... whoever it was, I agree with them!

Once Obama was elected I started my armory and not before. Not because of him but because his policies would change society into the dangerous 3rd world it has turned into.

Because we can and because the Democrat party has purposely created an feral subculture that makes our cities unsafe for normal people.

We have a second amendment so that we can be prepared to kill tyrants.

Kiling criminals, animals, and inanimate objects is just along for the ride.

Infringement is common though.

We must start removing the infringers, by the ballot box, the jury box or the cartridge box.
