Yup, we used to get that too if we were talking in class. The talkee got it on their cheek and no one was allowed to talk to that kid or they got it on their mouth too. The kid who was always getting out of their chair used to get tied in with binder twine. Slouchers had yard sticks slid down their shirt and into the back of their pants. Kids who refused to do theor homework got stuck in the closet which really sucked in winter because all the boots were covered in salty slush. The creation of the dunce cap was a class project and we made some great ones. Fail a test and you get to wear it for the rest of the day or until someone else earned it.

Older boys seemed to make a point of getting the teachers goat so they would earn trips through "the spanking machine". Thats where you would get to gym vlass and all the boys except the trouble maker would stand in two rows. The trouble maker had to walk between the two rows and the other boys would slap the trouble maker across the back of his bare legs with the flat of a hockey stick.

Cured ADD type behaviors rather quickly so everyone could get back to studying. Might sound odd today but Im not so sure it was a bad thing.

Forgot to mention the desk slammed on you fingers for playing in the pencil drawer and catching smacks with the toad stabber. Maybe another time...

11-12 y/o kids can be brats! Doesn’t justify what was done.

Total overreaction by school sending kids to nurse and notifying CPS, IMO. The duct tape didn’t harm anyone.

It would be better to just paddle them. My problem is what if the kid had a cold?

Mid 1960’s many of my pals attended Notre Dame High School for Boys in Niles Il. and they had a boxing coach.

If you were out of line, you might need some boxing instruction.
May have been a suburban legend? I think not.

At nearby Glenbrook South, a student hit a teacher.
The next day the father and his attorney were at the school.
The student suspension was ‘adjusted’ so he could attend class and graduate on time.

When I was in school a teacher did that and it started to fall off because of saliva from the kids mouth. The kids was so scared he kept pressing it back on so the teacher would not think he took it off.

Today’s kids? brats.

Better that the little bad tempered Irish Catholic priest that broke countless 2X4 sized yardsticks over knuckles we had. Course this was back in the 60’s.

So did the whacks from the yardstick ruin your life?

It went out of vogue partly because people saw it replaced one kind of hate with another kind. Now we have a third kind. The question shouldn’t be what kind of hate do we exercise now. It should be how do we get love back.

Heh. Not the sort of photo you want to surface in a child custody dispute, but the kid looks surprisingly comfortable.

Part of the problem is the lack of means to reach across the ever increasing cultural differences of our country. Having relegated the gospel to something you only read about on Hallmark cards (and the home is far more guilty before God than the school, as it has the God-assigned responsibility) we are wondering why we are seeing these consequences.

Scandinavian countries, until recently, managed to get by with very kindly treatment of their children. Because society was so homogeneous, shared canons of caring meant that a badly disruptive child was a rare thing. Dramatic punishments were virtually never necessary.

Now this has rendered modern Scandinavia badly incapable of grasping the Islamic immigration problem. It keeps on thinking it can charm this degree of evil out of existence based on, at best, nominal religion — and never succeeds.
