I found a poll that said 40% of Americans own a gun. I like your poll better. The latest population estimate, for 2016, says there are 325m citizens. 47% of 325m is almost 153m.
I often see the very outdated figure of 80m as the number of American gun owners. 153m is more like it and a conservative figure too since gun owners are apt to lie to pollsters.
NRA executive director Chris Cox said it best:
“The NRA spends millions of dollars each year teaching safe and responsible gun ownership, and Hollywood makes billions promoting and glorifying gun violence. And then the same hypocrites come in and say that we’re to blame for this.”
I wonder how often Frum has blasted hollywood for glorifying and enriching themselves from the imagery of gun violence.
