I found a poll that said 40% of Americans own a gun. I like your poll better. The latest population estimate, for 2016, says there are 325m citizens. 47% of 325m is almost 153m.

I often see the very outdated figure of 80m as the number of American gun owners. 153m is more like it and a conservative figure too since gun owners are apt to lie to pollsters.

Yes, very conservative. Inner cities are full of people who won't tell anyone that they own firearms. It's a common wisdom in such places. Lived in such a neighborhood long ago.
