Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock calculated where to shoot to kill maximum number of people
The Washington Examiner ^ | October 7, 2017 | Kimberly Leonard

Police found a note in the hotel room of Stephen Paddock, the gunman behind the mass shooting in Las Vegas, that had hand-written calculations about where he needed to aim to kill as many people as possible.

In an interview that will be aired Sunday on CBS's "60 Minutes," Officer Dave Newton from the Las Vegas Police Department's K-9 unit said he noticed a note on the shooter's bedside table after officers entered the room. The note was next to one of the windows that Paddock smashed with a hammer to clear an opening to fire into the crowd from his 32nd-floor hotel suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

"I could see on it he had written the distance, the elevation he was on, the drop of what his bullet was gonna be for for the crowd," Newton said. "So he had had that written down and figured out so he would know where to shoot to hit his targets from there."

Using semi-automatic rifles that he modified with a "bump stop" to increase their rate of fire, Paddock on Oct. 1 killed 58 people and injured nearly 500 others. Paddock, 64, killed himself with a gun before police entered the room to find his body and 47 weapons.

More than 20,000 people were attending the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival when Paddock began shooting into the crowd, which was about 400 yards away.

Stephen Paddock who had NO MILITARY SERVICE and was OUT OF SHAPE 60 something year old. Moreover I am suppose to believe he is more effective than James Bond and Rambo combined? Just a lone wolf....

Paddock did more than what many of our active military guys who do this stuff full time can do? He did this all on his own. Paddock knew military tactics, he was good shooter at night at over 300 to 400 yards in distance, hauled in over 23 different tactical weapons and NO ONE NOTICED! Thousands of rounds of ammo were brought in too, and not one person heard or saw anything. Paddock even installed cameras in the Casino without anyone noticing. This is a major Casino that has over 2,000 cameras. He did this all in a few days too.

Yeah right he did this all by himself.....(sarcasm off)

Don’t ever mess with Vegas PD baby. Especially when the boys are in town. 10 minutes dead. Later gators.

Yes. When the plan is to kill a crowd of innocents, and yourself, ALWAYS START WITH YOURSELF.

Do hookers charge their phones while they’re otherwise occupied?

Depends how much the John has paid for. It takes 30 mins to charge a phone. Pretty convenient.

The guard stopped it just by showing up. Paddock was a total coward, obviously, and he didn’t want to take a chance on engaging anyone who could shoot back.

If he hasn't he could have killed perhaps another 100.

From what I heard on about a 15 minute YouTube video, the shooter didn’t know what he was doing. He would fire a long burst, then there would be a long pause before he fired another long burst and would then pause for a long time before letting loose another burst. The long pauses, especially the first pause permitted crowd separation which saved many lives.

I think he was more interested in enjoying the carnage than in the actual number killed. As long as he got what he considered a high body count, he cared more about living his fantasy than about maximum efficiency.

Thank you! I am so grateful every time I think about that. I am sure it was all the praying I was doing at the time that kept us safe.

The bigger question would be whether the attack date is significant in Islam. Many are.

Ashura for the year 2017 is celebrated/ observed on Sunday, October 1.

Ashura falls on the 10th day of the 1st month of Muharram on the Islamic lunar calendar.
For Shia Muslims the day commemorates the death of Husayn ibn Ali and for Sunni Muslims the day relates to when Moses and his followers fled Egypt and were saved by God separating the Red Sea.

The Ashura massacre of March 2, 2004 in Iraq was a series of planned terrorist explosions that killed at least 178 and injured at least 500 Iraqi Shi’a Muslims commemorating the Day of Ashura.

Hillary had it better than I did though, no one gave me flowers...of course she “was under sniper fire” I was just shot at by an amateur, by mistake.

Might have been a nice hunting rifle in the trunk of a passing car or nearby parked car. What do you think was going through the mind of at least half of those country music lovers. Get to my car. Get my gun.

Some people might have thought about it but it would not have been a good idea. If people at the concert started shooting at a distant hotel and those bullets reached the hotel they could have passed through hotel windows and killed or injured more people. The police might have taken out anyone that did that. Not too good of an idea.

I didn’t say the media saw it. They reported what investigators told them.

Does a “look at me” type of man ever start terrorist style mass murder which will certainly get him killed or at best prison for life? I think not.

His motivation has to be extreme frustration with getting no respect or recognition or brain washed by some radical ideology.

A number of the audience members entered unlocked police cars and tried to get shotguns out of the rack. I’m not sure it was to return fire, though.

Yes I saw that but not sure Hodges gave the correct room number, or maybe we’re not clear on the layout of the suite? Nobody has reported that Paddock busted into someone else room to break the other window. Imagine planning this and just taking a chance there wouldn’t be anyone in that room? It doesn’t add up, every report is that both windows were a part of Paddock’s room.

Another thing that needs to be cleared up.
