Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock calculated where to shoot to kill maximum number of people
The Washington Examiner ^ | October 7, 2017 | Kimberly Leonard

Police found a note in the hotel room of Stephen Paddock, the gunman behind the mass shooting in Las Vegas, that had hand-written calculations about where he needed to aim to kill as many people as possible.

In an interview that will be aired Sunday on CBS's "60 Minutes," Officer Dave Newton from the Las Vegas Police Department's K-9 unit said he noticed a note on the shooter's bedside table after officers entered the room. The note was next to one of the windows that Paddock smashed with a hammer to clear an opening to fire into the crowd from his 32nd-floor hotel suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

"I could see on it he had written the distance, the elevation he was on, the drop of what his bullet was gonna be for for the crowd," Newton said. "So he had had that written down and figured out so he would know where to shoot to hit his targets from there."

Using semi-automatic rifles that he modified with a "bump stop" to increase their rate of fire, Paddock on Oct. 1 killed 58 people and injured nearly 500 others. Paddock, 64, killed himself with a gun before police entered the room to find his body and 47 weapons.

More than 20,000 people were attending the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival when Paddock began shooting into the crowd, which was about 400 yards away.

You really think the media got to see his income tax? And that info has never been substantiated by LE.

His brother said he was a multi millionaire and also that he had made both himself and the mother wealthy with joint ventures. He also said the mother STILL has dealings with him.

Automatic Fire Sprinklers are not activated by smoke. In general they are activated by a rise in temperature that causes a fusible link in the sprinkler head(s) to melt and open causing water flow. Fire alarms are activated by smoke (and some by heat, too).

Where did Paddock spend his range time?

By the time it hit the ground, no one would know that it came from the 32nd floor....and likely it would be no big deal as long as they didn’t get hit.

I agree money is no issue but I’m doubtful he would go that far in his prep. Maybe he did, though. It’s minor piece of the story anyway.

As for the fuel tanks, I read that the police weren’t convinced he was intentionally shooting at them. At least as of a day ago they weren’t.

Well, define experienced. That could be basic shooting skills or sharpshooter marksman or a whole lot of other stuff. From what I’ve seen so far, he was experienced enough to load and shoot, and to figure out how to aim. But given the number of jammed weapons the sheriff described, he was not smart enough to exercise his artillary enough to work out defects, ammunition that would not have feed issues, etc. so he might have been book smart, but not highly ‘experienced’.

That issue right there, where people have a knee jerk reaction to those even remotely involved, is why somethings cannot be devulged. In fact I was a suspect in an attempted murder case just because I was a good samaritan. Sometimes its best to not open the door. Lol.

Note Paddock gave his Mesquite address on the check and the Reno neighbor telling reporters he packed up a new van and left at the beginning of August, never seen at that address again. Marilou stayed in Reno for another two weeks per the neighbor.

I saw some video where there were a number of (.308?) shots before the first burst.

I assume that the first individual shots were at the av fuel tanks.

I don’t hear those in this composite.

You are only guessing at circumstances that fit the narrative.

What you are saying is possible, but so are a lot of other scenarios.

Thank you for that info, dear exit.

That was likely part of the plan and explains why no one was hit/killed by falling plate glass.

It had to of made a heck of a noise, on landing.

Possibly; if they had known exactly which room. I would think that a lot of the first 10 minutes was chaos, even for staff and security/LEO. About the time they could have figured out which room or even which area the shooting was from, according to reports the shooting stopped.

My three kids and I were feeding horses one afternoon and bullets started flying around us, hitting the dirt. I grew up around firearms and shooting, but it took a bit for me to realize we were being shot at. Took a little more of a bit for me to figure out what direction bullets were likely coming from and get my kids behind barn. Then I decided to make a run for the house to call LEO and arm myself.

I had a hard time processing each step...and they were simple steps. I should have known they were bullets right away since I was familiar with firearms; but not expecting that, I had to process it. I should have known right away where they were coming from because 3 directions were cow pastures and only one direction was a road and other houses. I had to decide whether to try to run to the house (through the bullets) with the kids or hide them behind the barn. I had to decide whether to just hide behind the barn with the kids and hope for the best or make a run to the house to call LEO and get myself armed.

Luckily we were all safe, shooting finally stopped. I had no idea why anyone would do that. I would have returned fire but didn’t see anyone, couldn’t tell exactly where the shooter was. As it turns out a man that had never lived in the country or had firearms had moved into one of the houses about 1/2 mile away. He had bought a rifle and was target shooting to learn how to shoot and had put up a berm- not tall enough obviously. He was target shooting up a storm and had no clue his bullets were going across the road and hitting all around us. The deputy that came out on my call went over there and figured out what was going on. Funny part was the guy argued with the deputy that it wasn’t his bullets flying at us. He was convinced his bullets would not go that far! The deputy had to show him on the box where it said how far they could go- as I recall he was shooting a .22 and distance was a mile.

Craziest thing I have ever had happen to me, but I can honestly say I have been under fire and it confuses the heck out of your brain. I had no idea the shooting at us was not intentional and pretty sure he was closer to hitting us without trying than he could have been if he had been aiming for us. It felt like everything was in slow motion to me, and I had to think my way through, I didn’t feel like any of my automatic reactions were working.

Haven't heard but he did practice....

One of the gun dealers said he cleaned a lot of guns for Paddock. Maybe he rented some isolated piece of property.
