Why Donald Trump Is President
The National Review ^ | September 23, 2017 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 09/23/2017 12:03:01 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Regarding Trump’s fire-the-NFL-protesters line last night that Teddy noted, it is a classic example of Trump’s, at times, gut-level political savvy. This kind of thing is why he’s president. He takes a commonly held sentiment — most people don’t like the NFL protests — and states it in an inflammatory way guaranteed to get everyone’s attention and generate outrage among his critics.

When those critics lash back at him, Trump is put in the position of getting attacked for a fairly commonsensical view. Of course, NFL owners firing players on the spot for protesting isn’t necessarily common sense, but this is where “seriously, not literally” comes in. Since everyone knows that owners aren’t going to do this, Trump’s statement registers for his supporters merely as forceful opposition to the protests, not as a specific plan of action.

His advocacy for a Mexico-funded border wall and for the Muslim ban played in a roughly similar way (although The Wall was taken more literally, hence Trump’s exertions to make a colorable case that it is being built).

Finally, when Trump is criticized and doesn’t back down it is taken by his supporters as a sign of strength. If a political consultant came up with this strategy, he’d deserve a huge raise. But it’s just Trump himself operating on instinct.

Your post triggered a great memory:

I was given two tickets to a Generals game at Giants Stadium. My Dad and I went, and the seats were fantastic: Field level right behind the General’s bench.

Herschel Walker was quarterback for the Generals.

I can’t remember the score, but it doesn’t matter.

My Dad and I had a great time and enjoyed the game.

Dad passed away three years ago.

I miss him.

He’s like an amusement park ride. Super fun at times but makes you vomit at others.

Does this refer to President Trump?

It’s good to hear what they are saying. We don’t want to be in our bubble like the Left stays in theirs. It also helps to know which talking points to expect before engaging.

If white NFL players stood up during the National Anthem and screamed the "N" word - "Nigger Nigger" they would be fired. There wouldn't be any of this talk about free speech... or phony baloney justifications/analysis by so called conservatives. Nope, the NFL would fire the people involved. And I would back them in that firring...

Actually, you make me vomit.

Yes, and the Never Trumper Rich Lowry makes me vomit. He single-handedly destroyed National Review to make money.

Lowest form of scum. In there with McCain, Ryan, and Romney.

I took it quite literally - I believe words have meaning. I expect this promise to be kept.

I sensed this the day Trump came down that escalator. I KNEW IT a few days later when Trumps response to the shitestorm was to double, triple and quadruple down on his remarks.

From the dead-tree Wall St. Journal:
[owner of ESPN] Disney needs to remember that the culture of sports is fundamentally celebratory and unifying, not divisive. - Holman W. Jenkins, “Never mind Jemele Hill, ESPN Isn’t Doomed”
But then, it’s an open question whether profit is more important to Hollywierd than “being woke” is.

“Because we’re not DU, that’s why.”

Agreed.

There is a significant faction here which keep trying to draw their safe zone around FreeRepublic. You know who I’m talking about... the ones with chalk on their fingers and chips on their shoulders.

I will be honest, the NFL is paying players to play Football, not make political statements on company time.

Owners need to decide whether or not they support America or not, and tell their players to act accordingly.

Fans need to decide if they support a team that is so anti-american that it can’t stand for the pledge of allegiance, as if it had anything to do with the alleged behavior of some ‘white employees of overwhelmingly black communities”.

I’m sorry but the United States of America DOES NOT EMPLOY OR COMMAND YOUR COPs, Your local government does, a local government which in most cases is dominated by your own party and race.

Holding uncle Sam responsible for what your local government’s agent do is like holding your neighbor responsible for the actions of kim jong un.

Address your own local leaders for the actions of your Local cops, or you will never make a diffrence.
