MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Russian Navy on Thursday fired seven cruise missiles at Islamic state targets in the suburbs of Syria’s Deir al-Zor, the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

It said the missiles were fired from two submarines in the eastern Mediterranean from a distance of 500-670 kilometers (727 miles).

Understanding Provocation [Provokatsiya]
March 29, 2014

One of the most powerful tools the Kremlin has in its secret arsenal of Special War is provocation, what they call provokatsiya.

While Moscow cannot claim to have invented this technique, which has existed as long as there have been secret services, there’s no doubt that Russians have perfected the art and taken it to a whole new level of sophistication and deviousness. At times, it can become a strategy all on its own (not always, mind you, with edifying results).

Provokatsiya simply means taking control of your enemies in secret and encouraging them to do things that discredit them and help you. You plant your own agents provocateurs and flip legitimate activists, turning them to your side.

When you’re dealing with extremists to start with, getting them to do crazy, self-defeating things isn’t often difficult. In some cases, you simply create extremists and terrorists where they don’t exist. This is causing problems in order to solve them, and since the Tsarist period, Russian intelligence has been known to do just that.

While this isn’t a particularly nice technique, it works surprisingly well, particularly if you don’t care about bloody and messy consequences. ..."

Did they fire at ISIS? Or at our friends in Al Qaeda and Al Nusra?

Good question...if the State Dept. starts squawking about it we'll have our answer.

ISIS was quite possibly created, at least in part, by the Russians. The KGB/FSB are notorious for doing such cleverly deceptive things as this. They have a long history of it.

Whole battalions of Russian speakers have been in ISIS, Ivan the Chechen was a main leader. You have that right. And before, Assad had no problem allowing jihadists to have camps and attack the US and other coalition forces in Iraq; so much to the point, that Bush almost ordered an invasion of Syria as well. That's historic record. It goes on and on.

Per keyword "Russia"; there is the story that Russia requested the US to lift surveillance of ISIS after Russia's ally Hezbollah let ISIS fighters escape from Arsal, Lebanon.

They may be the friends of Putinistas giving off false bogus misinformation. Post credible info of this or let this be seen as a lie.

Will this be anothe4r fake news story like father of all bombs?

The "fake" news is that the Russians aren't bombing the crap out of islamic terrorists...not whether they're using thermobaric bombs to do so.

Too bad your Saudi dog collar prevents you from cheering the good news.

The lies by Putinistas are shameful and disgraceful, they repeat lies with no foundation dredged up from Iranian propaganda or joke sources like Consortium news, Seymour Hersch etc.

They have to do this to keep up face for Putin, who may be the world’s richest man. Not bad for a KGB man.

O]World’s 1st trillionaire; Vladimir Putin or Jeff Bezos?

Some Moscow schools reportedly plan to delay start-of-term festivals to avoid clashing with Muslim worshippers

We’ve got to do this dance because Russia attacks a Christian nation in Ukraine but Russia itself may well become a Muslim nation itself.

prevents you from cheering the good news.

Cheering for your Russian buddies would be like cheering for the mafia for going after a street gang in your neighborhood. Sure, it's great that the gang is under attack, but the real reason they're doing it is so that they can ultimately take over and set up camp with the long-term goal of taking over other nearby neighborhoods, posing an even greater threat to the city at large. And in this case, it well may be that it was the "mafia" who were in some way responsible for the gang being there in the first place.

Another way to look at it might be one mafia clan moving out another. But then, you and most of the other Putin butt kissers here know full well what KGB/FSB Putin is all about. Your slime ball goal is to trick and deceive others to believe he is something he most definitely is not.

did they hit anything? so far, we’ve seen Russian soldiers that couldn’t be relied upon, and a Russian aircraft carrier that couldn’t recover aircraft.

not particularly scary.

“...a distance of 500-670 kilometers (727 miles).”

It takes a real idiot to give a RANGE of 500-670 kilometers and offer a conversion to EXACTLY 727 miles. You can’t check their conversion ratio because the premise is ridiculous.

What can you expect from people so poorly educated that they believe a term such as “2800 percent LESS” makes sense?

I couldn't begin to fathom the mind that wouldn't pause to reflect; "hey, that's a bit odd".

This error, goes beyond the garbage put out with "auto-correct dependency issues".

We are in a era with technology that allows anyone to instantly check the veracity of a claim or figure...

I actually find it VERY scary. We live in an age when supposedly educated people, even some who hold advanced degrees, routinely say and write things that make absolutely no sense whatsoever! I’m not talking about opinions, I mean such absurdities as “500 times less”, “3000 percent lower” and others just as crazy. Worst of all when you point it out to some of them they actually defend such idiocy. What is going on? How did this kind of stupidity get a foothold?

One of my favorites is the liberal who told my wife that she is convinced that homosexuality is inherited. Her “reasoning” was that she had seen a story about two identical twins, one of whom was heterosexual, while the other was homosexual. She said that that PROVES that it is something that is inherited! Maybe I’m stupid but I say that, if that proves anything, it proves that homosexuality is NOT inherited, if it were wouldn’t both identical twins be gay? How can she reach the opposite conclusion?

Much of what I see written now, even on FR, is impossible to decipher, often I cannot even determine whether the writer even knew what he intended to write, forget about trying to figure out the meaning of what he did write.

I don't disagree. When I "hear", fellow scientists spout nonsensical hyperbolic rhetoric, grounded in political ideology, that clearly abandoned the scientific method and principles...

I no longer enjoy reading scientific papers. I no longer support, review or contribute to the majority of research and symposiums. My white papers are confined to select areas of industry, that will benefit business and people/patients alike.

I'm not quite ready to create sharks with lasers but I am seeing the need.
