Miami’s mayor on Hurricane Irma: ‘If this isn’t climate change, I don’t know what is’

By David Smiley

September 08, 2017 4:21 PM

Miami’s Republican mayor called on President Donald Trump and the head of the Environmental Protection Agency Friday to acknowledge that climate change is playing a role in the extreme weather that has slammed his city and the continental U.S. this summer.

Speaking from Miami’s Emergency Operations Center in downtown, where the city’s senior public safety and political authorities will ride out Category 4 Hurricane Irma this weekend, Mayor Tomás Regalado told the Miami Herald that he believes warming and rising seas are threatening South Florida’s immediate and long-term future.

“This is the time to talk about climate change. This is the time that the president and the EPA and whoever makes decisions needs to talk about climate change,” said Regalado, who flew back to Miami from Argentina Friday morning to be in the city during the storm. “If this isn’t climate change, I don’t know what is. This is a truly, truly poster child for what is to come.”

And all the uninhabited planets in all the galaxies throughout the known universe never, ever have climate change. Right?

“This is the time to talk about climate change.

...

Haven’t the crooks, the corrupt and the scammers already been talking about it for decades?

There are theories, but very ill-supported by anything that resembles the careful science we once knew and appreciated, that adding CO2 to our air would bump the temperature way up.

One person noted that to the extent the globe warms for various reasons, its poles warm more than its equator does. The difference between the temperatures of the poles and equator drives the storms. Therefore this kind of “global warming” should mean fewer and weaker storms. We will get fewer Irma’s, not more. The problem here is that all this global warming is down in the noise and might even be exaggerated by measurement factors.

Anyone remember a few years back, when the Weather centers that predicted hurricanes, would say there would be “so many small hurricanes and so many large hurricanes” in that year?

Then it was found they were simply making up the numbers.

Don’t hurricanes occur during hurricane season or am I wrong?

...

Not only that but this time of September is the historical peak of hurricane season.

I don’t have much patience for people in moving down to Florida and developing there, in a Hurricane zone, then having the nerve of being ‘surprised’ and ‘shocked’ when a Hurricane comes.

Every time I think we’ve reached Peak Stupid there’s a liberal who proves me wrong. A hurricane in Florida isn’t climate change. A hurricane in Fargo, ND, that’s climate change.

1926 Miami Hurricane - 300+ dead
1928 Okeechobee Hurricane - 3000+ dead
1935 Labor Day Hurricane - 400+ dead

Yet the first Hurricane in 12 years must be caused by global warming.

Why just the other day it rained and now look at the bright sunshine! Damn climate changes all the time!

What’s even worse? Anthropogenic Solar Flares!! Manmade earthquakes!! And that solar eclipse...if that wasn’t caused by the man in the moon...

Don't hurricanes occur during the hurricane season or am I wrong?

Hollywood got there first. One of the most dramatic weather films made was "The Hurricane" starring Jon Hall and Dorothy Lamour in 1937. True, there was a plot involving the main actors and injustice. The only award the film got in the Oscars was the sound effects.

Anyone one who has seen the film would have viewed the absolute relentless fury of the hurricane. The terrified people seeking refuge in a church and the trees bending. The crashing of the waves.

So very long ago. Must have been based on actual hurricanes that occurred already.

Perhaps the loony left mayor of Miami needs to read up on the history of Miami.

3. 1926 Miami Hurricane

The eye of the hurricane passed over downtown Miami and parts of Coconut Grove and South Miami early Sept. 18, 1926. Residents of the city, unfamiliar with hurricanes, thought the storm was over and emerged from their places of refuge out into the city streets. The lull lasted only about 35 minutes, according to the NOAA. The worst part of the hurricane brought 10-foot storm surge onto Miami Beach.

As the hurricane moved inland, water from Lake Okeechobee was blown toward the southwest shore and the town of Moore Haven. A weakened muck dike that had been constructed to protect Moore Haven broke in several places. About 150 people drowned in the floodwaters that persisted in Moore Haven for weeks afterward.

The Red Cross reported that 372 people died in the storm. Damages in 1926 dollars were estimated at $105 million, which would be more than $100 billion in today's dollars.

This was way back in 1926.

I fully agree with his statement: it isn’t climate change, and he doesn’t know what is.
