Miami’s mayor on Hurricane Irma: ‘If this isn’t climate change, I don’t know what is’

By David Smiley

September 08, 2017 4:21 PM

Miami’s Republican mayor called on President Donald Trump and the head of the Environmental Protection Agency Friday to acknowledge that climate change is playing a role in the extreme weather that has slammed his city and the continental U.S. this summer.

Speaking from Miami’s Emergency Operations Center in downtown, where the city’s senior public safety and political authorities will ride out Category 4 Hurricane Irma this weekend, Mayor Tomás Regalado told the Miami Herald that he believes warming and rising seas are threatening South Florida’s immediate and long-term future.

“This is the time to talk about climate change. This is the time that the president and the EPA and whoever makes decisions needs to talk about climate change,” said Regalado, who flew back to Miami from Argentina Friday morning to be in the city during the storm. “If this isn’t climate change, I don’t know what is. This is a truly, truly poster child for what is to come.”

There has never been a hurricane before Donald Trump made all those EPA people retire. Never.

“You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before” (Rahm Emanuel).

We do know sea levels will rise sharply, albeit briefly.

Climate change would be if that hurricane stayed over FL for the next millennia - wouldn’t be a bad thing.

The mayor’s opinion is utter stupidity, and I know what it is.

The only way to stop hurricanes is to sign the Paris Climate Accords; transferring $100 billion each year to African dictators while allowing China and India unfettered industrial expansion.

That's what it's going to take!

This retardate should come up to the NYC area, where we've been having October-like weather since the third week of August. A tropical rainstorm right now would feel like boiling water falling from the sky.

Is this climate change, too?

The Mayor’s opinion is to get the federal dollars flowing into M-D-C coffers.

America has not had a hurricane in 12 years.

I remember we used to have 12-14 hurricanes a SEASON!

With 2-3 of those being major and hitting the SE somewhere.

Houses in Florida used to be single story concrete block FOR A REASON.

In those very good and very quiet 12 years, America got lazy.

– A massive housing bubble building crap house in places that never should have a house

– Homeowner not keeping flood or homeowners insurance because “it is just throwing money away”

– Builders ignoring housing codes and best design practices as it “doesn’t matter” anymore

– Building houses on barrier islands…etc.

But yeah. It’s climate change.

Well, gee, I wonder what politicians said following Galveston in 1900 or the great blow that nailed Massachusetts and Rhode Island in 1938 or the Armistice Day Storm of 1940 or Hurricane Betsy in 1965?

It's just the latest in a long anthology of poster children. We have heard from imbecilic politicians for as long as I have been alive. I s'pect there were lots more before I joined this vale of tears.
