Hurricane Irma Live Thread
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/04/2017 2:02:19 PM PDT by NautiNurse

While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.

Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.

FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

When you have ant-gouging laws it makes no sense for dealers to incur added expenses to bring in supplies off schedule.

Gas stations don’t make their money on gas - they make in on candy and those overpriced drinks.

In an emergency the dealer would have to hire extra drivers, rent tankers or pay their regular drives overtime. If they can’t recover their expenses they’re not going to do it.

We all know the laws were aimed at the guy who bought Walmart out of water last week and is now selling it out the back of his truck for two arms and a leg - but without profit there will be shortages.

A direct hit on my favorite island...Culebra. I wonder if the food/refreshment stands at Flamenco beach will hold up? They severed terrific small fried grouper when I was there.

Yes, landfall has happened on multiple islands already, though the wind speed reports you’re seeing are not necessarily indicative of maximums on the island... they could be maximums for a single point of data collection, but that’s not the same thing.

Not sure what anemometer devices can survive Cat 5 wind speeds and higher gusts. Do you know of any?

It does seem the “good news” is that the worst quadrant of the hurricane for the most part is missing land.

I think it’s better to be right in the center of the eye than to have the eye hit just south of you, because then you get the Northeast Quadrant, which is the worst part.

I know! Hoping it stays east. We’ll still get wind and rain, but not as devastating. Still gonna pull outside stuff inside. We’ll have a houseful of guest, albeit inanimate.

It seems every wind report I have seen that has the anemometer reporting 155+ soon fails.
