In Civil Disturbance Training, you are taught, over and over again, that the line is paramount. If it is broken, either by rioters, or by officers breaking ranks to chase or strike rioters, it loses its strength.
It then devolves into a melee of cops beating people and even if they deserve it, the optics and the story will be that the POLICE rioted, not the Alfa Hotels in front of them.
Officers that are separated from the line stand a much higher probability of being seriously injured or killed because the crowd will drag them off (or kick and beat them unmercifully).
I will admit that the US police tactics are a bit more passive than say these fellows:

Sure they got their martyr but she was mowed down by a Challenger instead of an AK47. Moms Demand Action (kinda sounds like a mature porn site, doesn’t it?) made a lameass attempt at conflating the Charlottesville incident with the need for more gun control. ANTIFAGS desperately need another martyr, one who will literally take a bullet for the team.
