On the bridge of the Fitz, the OOD was in charge.
OODs on duty receive exact, timely, information from the ships sensors, including Combat Information Center (CIC) about the location, course, speed, and trajectory of all objects on, above, or below the surface. the Fitzs OOD had precise warning, perhaps 45 minutes before the collision happened, that he was on a collision course. The OOD either removes the problem by changing course by one or two degrees on his own authority, or, notifies the captain who then makes the course adjustment. Surely, this OOD did none of the above.
we do know that he/she did not notify the captain because, at the time of impact, the captain was asleep in his cabin.
The Navys report mentions the names of other officersbut not that of the OOD. Who is this officer, and why the Navys effort to divert attention from his identity? Perhaps the Fitzs OOD is a member of a politically protected class, despite incompetence?
the officer in charge of damage control managed the damage control parties from the bridge. Since success in damage control depends so heavily on stopping troubles as close to the source as possible, speed of decisions and execution is essential. Like any other officer who has received damage control training I cannot imagine trying to manage a fast moving situation by having someone close to the problem interpret the problem for me and then relay my orders. The Fitzs damage control fiasco may be a small reflection of the OODs failure on the bridge. What was that officer doing before the collision that so diverted his/her judgment, and after the collision that it took him/her 14 minutes to sound General Quarters?

The turn was after the collision and there’s no dispute about that. Early reports were just conflicting, is all.
OOD hasn’t been named as the investigation is still underway and it could be anyone qualified by the CO as such (I’ve seen NCOs picks up an OOD letter on smaller ships, Pegasus class etc).
Press doesn’t have the info because it hasn’t leaked and should t while the investigation is underway
When the time differences in the plot of the two ships are resolved, it appears the civilian ship impacted, turned around and came back to the destroyer to try to help, then was told to leave the site of the impact by “somebody” on the destroyer.
Or a Female or Muzzie!
Thank you for your polite response. I will accept that version.
Obama smiles at his Navy transformation. I can only imagine the other services. Thank God I am out of that mess.
What's not in question is the failure to lead. Someone on the bridge had to have known how bad the situation was.
“First glimmer of explanation on Fitzgerald USN incident that makes sense.”
What? Where? There was no explanation.
“My guess is that the OOD was not there...for whatever reason.”
What about the JOOD? He should certainly have caught this.
OOD was probably texting.
I think when all the dust settles...there’s just two guys standing there...some junior-junior Petty Officer and some mid-grade Petty Officer. Maybe the OOD had some brief reason to step out for fifteen minutes....maybe to take a smoke even. But I suspect we will find that there was no element of leadership standing there and reviewing actions.
“Maybe the OOD had some brief reason to step out for fifteen minutes”
In my day, we didn’t abandon our watch unless properly relieved by a qualified watch-stander.
This doesn’t seem likely to me.
To your point, I have seen what were supposed to be reasonably intelligent and supposedly qualified people simply drive an operation onto the rocks and not exhibit a single shred of remorse or alarm. They apparently just don’t understand or care about the cascade of horrible events that can follow their failures.
Secondly, that the identity of the real person responsible for this collision or that of the McCain has not already been leaked out is a testimony to intimidation of the very impressionable youngsters of the crews. The OOD will be known to those who pay attention.
The article is by Angelo Codevilla, someone to take seriously.
There are the rights of the to be accused to consider here.
You’d think someone would learn after a woman pilot screwed up and tossed an F14 in the drink. But apparently not.
Maybe his name is Mary?
Disappearing on watch can get you court-martialed. Or at least it used to. Don’t know about the Navy any more.
And getting sailors killed because you disappeared on watch?
They might as well just weld your cell door shut when you get to Leavenworth.
