If Kelly and Trump can become a real team, it will be a game changer

I first met then-Lt. Col. John Kelly when he was the Marine Corps liaison to the House of Representatives, and I was speaker of the House. We traveled together on a number of overseas trips. He was the best liaison officer I have worked with in any service.

Even then, Kelly was smart, diplomatic, personable, a good listener – and knew how to get things done. I found him short on words and long on wisdom.

Gen. Kelly later served multiple tours in Iraq, where he excelled. He understood the military challenges there, but even more importantly he understood the cultural and political challenges.

His last active duty assignment was serving as commander of the Southern Command. I visited him at SOUTHCOM headquarters and was deeply impressed with his grasp of Latin American economics and politics, as well as the challenges posed by organized crime.

I was delighted when Gen. Kelly agreed to serve as secretary of Homeland Security. I thought he brought with him a unique understanding of the challenges we face at our border and with violent multinational gangs. In fact, I thought the choice of Kelly was a good indicator of the caliber of people then-President-elect Trump wanted in his Cabinet.

On several occasions, I have had the opportunity to discuss a wide range of homeland security issues with Secretary Kelly. Every time, he impressed me with how much he understood, how clear his plans were, and how effective his implementation was going to be.

President Trump has made a big decision in bringing Kelly to the White House to be chief of staff.

This was a good decision, hopefully everyone in the WH will be on board. Not sure.

Maybe, just maybe Kelly can bring the bureaucracy to heel. As to the 535 idiots in Congress, that will be up to the voters.

There are basically two types of officers: Commanders and Staff Officers.

Generally speaking (no pun intended), good Commanders don’t make good Staff Officers, and good Staff Officers don’t make good Commanders.

In the past, General Kelly has been a good Commander, but as President Trump’s Chief of Staff, he will be in the “Mother” of all Staff jobs, and I hope he can adjust to not being in command.

A key question is whether Scaramucci is going to report to Kelly.

Hard to see how this works properly if he doesn’t.

Well, I suppose we’ll find out. If not Scaramucci will fire them.

For the past few years it has been hard for this old KW jarhead to remain proud of the current Corps. Training commands run by women, butt-buddies in the foxholes, co-ed combat training, sensitivity training, and the outlawing of physical abuse have made me very sad.

So this appointment of a seemingly real Marine does give me hope that President Trump will oversee the rebuilding of the Corps into the famed fighting force it once was.

I like Scaramucci’s fire, but he has demonstrated that he needs a leash with a long cable. At least for a while.

This is a coup that’s going on. I’m glad that President Trump brought a respected, experienced military man in as Chief of Staff into the WH. That’s for obvious reasons, going beyond the first priority of getting coup members out of the WH.

Good points.

But as Chief of Staff, in a sense, he’ll be commanding. I’m sure he will lock some heels.

If I am correct on my assumptions of PDT, Scarmucci’s initial landing may have been orchestrated.

PDT...Take this BIG STICK and stir the fire, I don’t care how many and how far out the hot cinders reach.

Once that is done and the WH Staff sufficiently ‘fears’ him, he can go about his day taking on the MSM.

I give this Marine general the benefit of the doubt. He was an enlisted man. He went to Parris Island, not Annapolis.
