Electric car maker Tesla has rolled out its new Model 3 vehicle - the company's cheapest car to date.

The first 30 customers - most of them employees of the company - received their cars on Friday.

Chief executive Elon Musk said the Model 3 was the "best car for its cost, either electric or gasoline".

Prices start at $35,000 (£26,650), which the firm hopes will bring mass market interest.

The price is still higher than that of rival electric car the Nissan Leaf, which starts at $30,680, or the hybrid Chevrolet Volt, which goes for $34,095.

30 delivered. Ratcheting up to 10000 a month will be a supply chain disaster. Anyone can build 30 ...only a very few can build 10000 per month.

.....and when the subsidies go away ?????...

“..it’s very small, and has no range on a charge.”

If a spouse or GF ever utters these words to you, kill yourself.

To make e-cars competitive with gasoline powered cars just legislate that the flow rate of gas pump fuel nozzles must be set at 1 gallon per hour.

Or that gas tanks can only be 3 gallons and can only be filled once a day.

“I stayed in two hotels in the Province of Quebec last weekend, both of which had charging stations for electric cars”

I wonder, do they add the cost of the electricity to your hotel bill, or is it independent of that?

Don’t be a jerk.

These cars work well in the Montana climate.

I think e-cars are a liberal conspiracy to make people cut back on driving. We just drove to Florida and back and enjoyed the hell out of the trip. Couldn’t do that with a metrosexual car.

I post facts based on the laws of physics and you me a jerk? You are scientifically retarded. I know math and science are hard but just try a little harder.

WHAT PART OF THEY WORK FINE IN THE MONTANA CLIMATE DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?

Cabin heat is a very small electric drain compared to locomotion.

Get a life, Jerk.

The people that think e-cars are cool usually failed math and science in school. No common sense.

Neither. It is insanity to pay over 30k for a basic vehicle with a 300 mile driving range and that under optimum conditions such as no A/C use, speeds of 50 mph at most, flat roads, etc.

Once gov’t subsidies stop (and they will) Tesla will fold.

Hey, you want to post figure on range with and with out heat on? Hey jerk face try doing a google search before typing your BS.

Cold weather presents two main challenges for electric vehicles: cold air limits battery performance, and running the heater drains the battery. As temperatures go below freezing, some drivers accustomed to traveling 250 miles on a single charge have seen their car’s range drop to 180 miles. Drivers in extreme climates might see the range decrease even more. That might force drivers to choose cars with bigger batteries than they would need in the summer, adding $10,000 or more to the cost of the cars.

Electric Vehicles Out in the Cold

My fully equipped 2017 Cruze gets 40mpg (average) with air conditioner on at 70-75 mph. Cost - $22,000 out the door (hatchback with paint upgrade & 6 speed manual). Tesla can get screwed.

EVs are a secondary mode of transportation for local commuting. No worries there.

I’d still use a conventional car for long distance trips.

There’s always the cost of gas and maintenance.

When it gets expensive, an EV becomes more competitive.

E-cars may works is in a dry warm climate were air conditioning and heat are not really an issue. Taking this thing out for a spin in January up in Minnesota could cost you your life.

So Elan Musk's next big invention should be a mini-kerosene heater that is safe to use in his E-Automobiles. Then Minnesota will do just fine

A bland, generic looking car, except the front end is ugly.

This or the Leaf? How about none of the above.
