Electric car maker Tesla has rolled out its new Model 3 vehicle - the company's cheapest car to date.

The first 30 customers - most of them employees of the company - received their cars on Friday.

Chief executive Elon Musk said the Model 3 was the "best car for its cost, either electric or gasoline".

Prices start at $35,000 (£26,650), which the firm hopes will bring mass market interest.

The price is still higher than that of rival electric car the Nissan Leaf, which starts at $30,680, or the hybrid Chevrolet Volt, which goes for $34,095.

Just how much money per car is being stolen from unwitting taxpayers? Pathetic.

I am not a fan of electric cars but I am very impressed by the relatively low price on Model3.....Though maybe it is so stripped at this base price that you have to add on another 5-10 thousand. Who knows?

Wonder when mine’s going to get delivered. 10,000 a month they say they’ll be able to build (at some point...) and the first six months are going to be “manufacturing hell.”

The company has focused on the luxury car market before.

Going mass-market is the electric car’s future.

It’s the best $76,000 electric car you can buy for only $35,000 thanks to taxpayer subsidies and handouts to Musk.

I think it was EPA Commissioner Pruitt who said Musk is the undisputed master at getting Federal and State subsidies of all kinds. Amounting to 6 billion for his companies

Elon Musk’s growing empire is fueled by $4.9 billion in government subsidies. ... getting subsidies for ... from the state of California. The federal ...

Would you rather have this or a Nissan Leaf for a few thousand less?

Upgraded upholstery, moonroof and upgraded stereo are the only options that I was aware of when I ordered mine. Passed on the moonroof and upgraded upholstery.

E-cars may works is in a dry warm climate were air conditioning and heat are not really an issue. Taking this thing out for a spin in January up in Minnesota could cost you your life.

I stayed in two hotels in the Province of Quebec last weekend, both of which had charging stations for electric cars (Quebec is a socialist mini France that is always the first Canadian province to embrace the latest leftist fad). Between the two hotels there were 14 charging stations. And not a single one was being used.

...

Especially self-driving technology and ride sharing. A larger market will also lead to more charging stations.

People in northern climes don’t want to get stuck on the side of the rad when it is -30 deg. F.

I remember back in the early 2000’s how many people were whining and bitching about dark fiber that would never be used.

“Would you rather have this or a Nissan Leaf for a few thousand less? “

My son has a Leaf. It looks like a Japanese Turd, it very small, and has no range on a charge.
