Ah the smell when it was lit and then turned off. Brings back memories.

Perhaps Awan gave up the location of the dirty bomb.

You have been breathing too much gasohol.

E0 gasoline smells “right”.

The best was a 5 gal can of Sunoco Racing Gas I bought to get pure gas for a new lawnmower until I could secure a cheaper source of E0. I think it had a fair amount of benzene in it.

Ocracoke used to have large diesel backup generators to power the island during times that fragile powerline from Hatteras gave problems. They were decommissioned in the early 80s, IIRC.

“This will not be good for business”

This is the equivalent of a hurricane in July.

One of my favorite places (see FR name). I proposed to my now wife there, we honeymooned there and we go back there with our kids nearly every summer. This week it’s a little bit more like Portsmouth Island, which lies across the inlet.

It’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.

Even though my husband is from Louisiana and I’m from the Houston area neither of us had heard about it until about a year ago.

You’re welcome!

Bump from a 2-time Banks vacationer and 1-time Ocracoke visitor, both times in the 2000's.

10,000 tourists on an island with a base year-round population of under 1000.

"PCL Construction told the utility it had driven a steel casing into an electric transmission cable while working on the new Bonner Bridge on the state’s coast around 4:30 Thursday morning, inadvertently cutting off power to Ocracoke and Hatteras islands."

Old ones are but they still make and sell new ones.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-Premium-Dual-Fuel-Lantern-with-Carry-Case/29005438

My “new” one was built in 1983. Got two Colemans, two oil barn lanterns, about four inside oil lanterns, two candle lanterns and tons of candles. Out in the storage building I have a 5 Kw generator.

Plus a ton of camping gear and food.

Yhe last time a hurricane knocked out power for a few days I promised myself I would live in confort.

They were driving casings at 4:30 am? Rise and shine tourists! Reminds me of Army basic training when the screaming drill sergeant woke us at the same time.

There are very few tourists staying overnight at Oregon Inlet, a few condos at the marina and an NPS campground. This is not in the middle of a populated area. The work has to be done. They’re figuratively making hay while the sun shines, it’s hurricane season you know. The Bonner Bridge they’re working to replace has problems, and it’s a huge undertaking.

It was usually on a camping trip somewhere in wilds of the Colorado mountains. We turned it on at dusk and it was the only light until we climbed into our bags and went to bed. And the hissing sound it made....

Some of the best times of my childhood.

When they built that bridge they spoiled it.

Ever use a Coleman kerosene lantern? Wow
A friend had one. Looked similar to a gas lantern.
IIRC the mantles were bigger.

It had a small dish that you had to put a little fuel in and ignited. That preheated the generator. Then you turned on the main fuel.
Very bright.

The Dual fuel lantern can run on E-10 ?

It's good to get the full story from someone who knows. Thanks!
