CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) — Gov. Roy Cooper has issued a state of emergency for Ocracoke and Hatteras islands due to a massive power outage affecting parts of the Outer Banks.

[snip]A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for visitors to Ocracoke Island as well. No one is allowed on the island unless they can prove residency.

[snip]Tideland Electric Membership Corporation says that PCL Construction — the company working on the new Bonner Bridge — drove a steel casing into the underground transmission cable that runs near the bridge around 4:30 Thursday morning, which caused the outage.

My uncle, Alfred did the engineering for the first power transmission towers to the outer banks.
RIP Alf.

What did visitors to Ocracoke do 150 years ago?

PCL Construction seems to always be looking for minority subcontractors to do the work.

We love vacationing at the Outer Banks.

But I’ve always wondered who had the foresight to plan to get mass quantities of electric power and fresh water way the hell out there.

Kudos to your uncle.

My thought as well.

Maybe the gov is unable to monitor their activity, so they don’t want anyone doing anything they don’t know about.

Even if everybody works off a well w/an electric pump, there is such a thing as bottled water.

The state is getting much more tyrannical in dealing w/”emergencies”.

When my parents took out there in the 50’s We camped cause there were no motels, cabins or condos. Lighting was by gas lanterns and cooking was Colman stoves. There wasn’t a bridge, you got out there by modified WWII LCT’s. and the first couple of miles on the north end of Hatteras was steel mat.

I’m sure the vacation rental owners pushed for this so that travelers could get reimbursed via travel insurance for having their vacations cut short. The weather has been unusually hot here in NC, even for July. The groundwater is in many instances not potable, only used to flush toilets and such. If there’s no power to the rental, there’s no power to cook, no refrigeration, same goes for restaurants and stores. This isn’t the same as if those two islands were strictly populated by locals who live there, they’re allowed to stay in case you didn’t notice the wording of the evacuation order. I don’t like Roy Cooper myself, think McCrory got frauded out of the governor’s mansion by Durham County, but McCrory would have done the same thing. A bunch of tourists aren’t going to be able to fend well for themselves with no electricity and therefore not much of anything else out there. It was the right thing to do.

Apparently Coleman lanterns are collectors items now.

They were a good way to learn about the need to treat gasoline with reverence.

Bummer. The wife and I like Ocracoke but not when tens of thousands of tourists descend on it. Its quite nice in early November. When I get stressed at work I sometimes retreat to my cube and pull up the live harbor webcam on my computer.

My ancestors settled Ocracoke so I can say this with some authority. 150 years ago there were no visitors. Life was simple.

Dare and Hyde Counties are red, they voted Trump. They derive much of their livelihood from the tourist trade.

We go there every year. This will not be good for business

Oops, black eye for Tesla, guess what powers the Ocracoke microgrid and provides backup for emergency services?

https://ocracokeobserver.com/2016/12/12/ocracoke-is-first-in-the-state-for-a-microgrid/

This was never intended to power the entire island and couldn’t, but it failed to start up in the first emergency backup situation that I’m aware since the system went online.

Carib > OBX. OBX is too crowded in the best time of the year and in the off-season its beautiful but too cold to swim. The atlantic ocean also is not nearly as nice as Carib or pacific.
