Debate is raging on social media about President Trump's decision on Wednesday to reverse an Obama-era policy and ban transgender individuals from serving openly in the military, but how did service members perceive the policy in the first place?
A Military Times/Institute for Veterans and Military Families poll of 1,664 active-duty troops conducted on a voluntary and confidential basis as President Barack Obama's term was coming to an end last December found significantly more respondents believed it to be hurtful than helpful. The Washington Examiner's David Freddoso reported on the survey upon its release last January:
Service members are divided on various initiatives by Obama. On balance (four-to-three in favor), they view the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" as a good thing, but they frown upon mixed-gender combat units (two-to-one against) and transgender service members (more than three-to-one against).
More specifically, when asked how the policy allowing transgender individuals to serve openly "affected military readiness," 41 percent said it "hurt" while 12 just percent said it "helped."
Then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced the change to allow transgender soldiers last summer, roughly six months before the poll was taken, saying in a Defense Department press release, "This is the right thing to do for our people and for the force."

To me, it is only about taxpayers’ money. WE should pay for pervs to cut things off and for hormone treatment? Nope.
I live in Virginia Beach and nearly everyone I know is retired or active duty military. Everyone. And no one that I knew was in favor of ANY of obama’s social engineering initiatives. Not babes in combat, queers in the ranks or Ash Carter’s transgender insanity.
All SANE people would think this way.....problem is now, the world has gone CRAZY, and Everything is all about PERVERSION!!
I was given a referral to a doctor at my local hospital the other day. Going into the office, I was handed the fill out sheet by either a trannie or a transgender. Creepy as hell. Am I wrong to look for another doctor??
For once, the MSM probably doesn’t think the opinion of Muslims in the military matter.
It’s no less creepy than a nurse dressed in a full clown outfit.
Trumps tweet went much further than that
See
Personally as long as they meet all the requirements and can do the job, I don’t mind women in combat form a civilian perspective. Now if in the field it causes problems that negatively impacts the mission, the role needs to be adjusted.
However, there is no reason to allow trans people in the military if they are there for free surgery and conseing. IMHO, this is why don’t and don’t tell was the ideal solution. Anyone could serve the mission of the military while keeping all the BS SJW crap out.
If the trannie is admin only, why give up a good doctor?
Not only not wrong - you should make a point of finding another doctor.
No.
Oh man, that is awful! LOL!!!!!
I have talked to people who lived around transgenders and some of the stories are quite scary. I actually got this in a E-mail a year or two ago when the tranny in the military debate first started.
Excerpt Begins:
One time me and my friend ( who is a transgender male to female ) was at a store and we were browsing around when a little old lady came up behind my friend to ask them to help get something off a high shelf. and I am paraphrasing here: Excuse me sir, could you help me with getting ( i forget what the item was ) off that shelf?
Well my friend flew the complete hell off the handle as they whipped around and went on a five minute tirade saying things like Do I look like a man? and Are you f**ing blind? in a very aggressive manner. The poor old lady looked stunned as she was just innocently asking someone for help only to be verbally lashed out at by this woman that if she had any doubt about gender she knew for sure at this point that is was a man in a dress due to the aggressive nature of the lashing out she was receiving.
I remember standing there stunned as if just witnessing a Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde moment. I remember thinking that if only my friend had just turned around and used some damned charm instead of flying off the handle and trying to FORCE their idea of how they should be referred to a kindly old lady. An old lady who just wanted something off a shelf and wasnt consciously or maliciously thinking about the gender expression of the person she was asking.
After that day I took steps to slowly distance myself from that person so that I didnt dump them but instead just lost contact with them via attrition. I didnt want to wake that horrible dragon up that I saw that day in the store on accusations that I stopped being their friend because they were trans instead the real reason was because I saw how unhinged they could be for the dumbest and most innocent of reasons. It was like if anyone appeared to question their own self validation, even if it was an innocent mistake, they could fly off the handle. This wasnt like someone with a short emotional fuse, but instead someone with a volatile emotional hair trigger.
A couple of months after the incident in the store I was talking to my cousin who is a tall woman who lives in the country and I told her the story. She laughed after I told her about it and i asked her why she laughed. She told me that sometimes after she does her chores on the farm she sometimes stops in at the local Wal-Mart to either pickup fixins for supper or things like motor oil for her husband. She said her chore clothes are overalls and she packs her hair into a hat to keep it clean, and that one day a little old lady came up to her from behind while she was in the store and asked SIR for some help getting something off a high shelf. She turned around and the little old lady apologized saying something like: Oh Im sorry maam. She said she just smiled at the old lady and said oh, dont worry, it happens all the time because I am tall and they both had a good laugh about it and went their separate ways after she had retrieved the item for the sweet old lady. After she told me this I thought how different that embarrassing experience could have been had she handled it like a genuine person would have.
I have talked to other people who have been acquainted to trans people and the one common thing that I have discovered is that if you ask enough people they all have stories of trans people flying off the handle when someone else innocently mis-genders them. People wonder why I consider trans people in the military such a bad idea. I just have tell them this story and how what would happen if a foxhole if someone under fire accidentally mis-genders their fellow soldier. Talk about an un-friendly fire situation... I mean i consider myself a progressive, but this incident I personally experienced and further collaborated similar incidents with other people who I would consider progressive as well leads me to think that there is a serious risk of having someone with a such an issue in any sort of military situation. I have to say NO to allowing transgender people in the military, they need to get their lives sorted out first and foremost and the military is not a place for them to be doing that.

So yeah, this is from someone I know who is a progressive liberal who agrees with Trump on this issue, even though I am 100% sure they didnt vote for Trump. I think just the whole idea of someone flying off the handle even if someone inadvertently calls them with a gender pronoun they dont agree with is really scary, especially in the military.
But my understanding is that Obama didn't IMPLEMENT any policy, but merely announced that the DoD needed to put it in place until July of this year.
When Matti's took over, he used his authority to delay the policy until further study was done.
In other words, NOTHING HAS CHANGED.
Obama, in his arrogance, thought Hitlery would win. She would be the one to get to put in the policy officially.
The American people had other ideas.
I hope this change means we can call these mentally ill whack jobs faggots again.
Women make great peacetime soldiers. They have been a total disaster in combat or near-combat units.
For example, in the first gulf war I saw multiple battalions have to be withdrawn because so many female soldiers were getting pregnant, on purpose in order avoid combat, that combat readiness fell below acceptable minimums.
I remember talking to one female sgt. and asked her what she did (I was not military). She told me she was the camp whore. She wasn’t joking either.
The have periods. They get pregnant. They get gang raped (to death in some hush hush cases). They have special needs (costs). They cannot meet the same physical standards. They are less able to aggressively kill. Male soldiers get killed unnecessarily trying to protect them. Bottom line they are not cost effective.
“To me, it is only about taxpayers money. WE should pay for pervs to cut things off and for hormone treatment? Nope.”
In my humble opinion, if we just cut off medical funding for transgenders in the military, but let transgenders stay in the military and are offered an honorable to leave, they will voluntarily leave.
The fact that transgenders join the military for only one reason has become apparent. They want the government to pay for their transition. It costs about 100k to do it and states don’t want to pay for it.
