Winter is coming for the North.
Last year, three states in the Northeast New Jersey, New York and Connecticut landed in the top five places people were moving out of fastest, according to 2017 data from United Van Lines. (The other two states on the list were Illinois and Kansas.) And data from Pew Charitable Trusts found that while people are all about moving to the South (their population grew by nearly 1.4 million people from 2014 to 2015) and the West (866,000 more people,) the population growth in the Northeast is sluggish.
The Northeastern exodus is particularly acute in many big cities like New York City. Since 2010, more than 1 million people have moved from the New York area which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island to other parts of the country.
So why are so many northerners packing their bags? The insanely high cost
Data released on Wednesday by personal finance site GoBankingRates.com reveals that the No. 1 financial fear of people who live in the Northeast is that they will have to live in debt forever; the Northeast is the only region of the country that ranked this as No. 1. (The other regions put retirement as their No. 1.)
And no wonder theyre worried. The cost of living across the region is among the highest in the nation and three of the five most expensive states or districts in the country (New York, Washington DC, Massachusetts) are in the area. (The other two states are Hawaii and California.) Having to spend so much just to get by can make getting out of debt seem much harder. And housing costs and taxes in many of these states are also sky high.

I’ve recently heard someone call a real jerk from the NE a “Masshole”.
‘Masshole’ is actually in the dictionary, and it means just what you think.
Solzhenitsyn loved it there-reminded him of Russia. Send the next batch of CONSERVATIVE Russian immigrants there.
My inlaws in NJ have lived on the same 2.1 acres since 1970. They pay $14,000/year in property taxes.
Jobs, booming economy, cheaper housing, beautiful scenery, mountains, beaches.
Until we started losing state-wide races consistently because of the influx of liberals we were a reliably conservative state. Our legislature still is, but our governors and Senators are all Democrats.
Excellent news! Lie down with communist dogs, don’t complain about the fleas.
You mean lefties moving out won’t swing purple states?
Northeast liberals, please when you move throw away your liberalism. We left for freedom..not taxes...
Conservatives aren’t stupid. Why would they want to move to a liberal area?
Conservatives create wonderful communities. Liberals create horrible communities. So the liberals leave and go to the nice places (created by conservatives).
It’s like driving your car into a brick wall, then borrowing your neighbor’s nice car.
Crossing the Mason-Dixon going north on I-95 is so depressing. It is like going into the Soviet Union, a dark cold place full of hateful people.
well lets think about this a second...
IF L move to C areas and infest them turning them into more L areas... what do you think will eventually happen?? no matter where you live!
It’s mostly northern Virginia. Because it is part of the DC metro area and it has LOTS of government jobs and high tech jobs.
aw geez, not this $hit again !!
“Liberal policies driving out businesses and people.
Unfortunately the libs bring their Democrat voting with them.”
Exactly and the process will repeat itself wherever these people move.
Don’t come to Florida. We is full up.
Okay, explain the first 2 in the context of the 1980s or 1990s of people leaving the northeast, “Virginia or BUST!!!!” I never heard of Virginia as a hotspot or future destination from those of the north. Yes I heard of the northeasterns moving to Florida, well because it’s Florida and I was one of them. Where were these jobs or booming economy coming from? Tobacco?
Try finding a carpenter or a plumber in the boonies of PA! Most of my family left the NY-NJ area due to crime and taxes, but you could call someone for a minor repair and they'd come running as if you had an emergency. Here you're lucky if they return your call.
That’s because conservatives left the democrats (like you) and the liberals left the Republicans.
It all happened in one generation between 1968-1985.
Now, I’m not sure if being a Republican = conservative anymore, yet democrat = liberal is certainly worse than ever!
Dude, did you sleep through the last election ?
Remember November ? The shining sea of red ? Michigan ? Wisconsin ? Pennsylvania ?
Government. They’ve all moved to VA to feed on the government pork/teat.
At least NOVA (Northern Virginia). It has become Maryland.
