Trump's DOJ gears up for crackdown on marijuana

The Trump administration is readying for a crackdown on marijuana users under Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

President Trump’s Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety, led by Sessions, is expected to release a report next week that criminal justice reform advocates fear will link marijuana to violent crime and recommend tougher sentences for those caught growing, selling and smoking the plant.

Sessions sent a memo in April updating the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice Department (DOJ) component heads on the work of the task force, which he said would be accomplished through various subcommittees. In the memo, Sessions said he has asked for initial recommendations no later than July 27.

“Task Force subcommittees will also undertake a review of existing policies in the areas of charging, sentencing, and marijuana to ensure consistency with the Department's overall strategy on reducing violent crime and with Administration goals and priorities,” he wrote.

Criminal justice reform advocates fear Sessions’s memo signals stricter enforcement is ahead.

“The task force revolves around reducing violent crime and Sessions and other DOJ officials have been out there over the last month and explicitly the last couple of weeks talking about how immigration and marijuana increases violent crime,” said Inimai Chettiar, director of the Brennan Center's Justice Program.

Maybe he’ll be fired. Then you’ll know for sure.

I agree with you totally, having seen the results of it first hand for 25 years within NY State’s prison system.

So if Trump approves of this, it is in opposition to policies he took on the campaign trail.

Yeah, sort of like ending DACA on his first day in office. Trump can direct his department heads to pursue, or not pursue any of these policies that are more or less discretionary. Are you saying that Trump is too weak an executive to issue a simple instruction related to marijuana enforcement?

“Sessions is an old fool to waste the time and resources of the DOJ when Trump and his supporters are fighting to keep this country free from the clutches of the Left”.

Agreed. And it certainly isn’t going to help gain support for President Trump from casual users or Libertarian types.

Then call your Congress critters and tell them you need the 'law' changed... What is it with people who claimed they are for 'law and order' and them belly ache when that is exactly what they get. Obama is a pot head... look where he took US.

That's exactly what voters are doing in state after state. Try to pay attention.

Funny how so-called "conservatives" suddenly become big fans of an overreaching federal government when it comes to squashing the will of voters in states who went to the polls and legalized something we never voted to prohibited in the first place.

Until the government butts out violent criminals will do the dealing in pot.
That’s up to the legislature to decide.

For quite a while I had been hoping that since he recused himself from the Russia investigation, behind the scenes Sessions was readying investigations/charges for Hildabeast et al...

Apparently marijuana and the D.A.R.E program are his priorities.

Sometimes I think I am a poor judge of character—I really respected this guy when he came to the Trump rally in Alabama as one of the first GOP to support Trump, but he hasn’t done much since :(

I’m hardly delusional. I spent 25 years working in uniform in NY State’s prison system, and there’s plenty of proof to counter your claims. You don’t think people get killed over marijuana? Think again.

Priorities are mixed up if The Hill article can be believed. First go after the DC corruption, then if you have time, worry about marijuana.

“Sessions agenda and misplaced moral positions have done more to undermine Trump and the conservative agenda than anything else.”

Agreed! What happened to “Lock her up”? People didn’t vote for Trump to jumpstart the war on marijuana and increase the asset forfeiture program.

If DJT terms Sessions announcing that 10th Amd. says weed is states’ purview, he will be able to jettison the GOPe next year.

I think Sessions digging in on this just sealed his fate.

I paid attention to the last president who is a life long pothead... Congress passed the laws they intended for the executive branch to enforce... So does a ‘federal’ law supersede ‘state’ law... just ask your US Congress critter. Potheads are the last people to put in charge of anything.

...marijuana messes up a lot of young folks and sends them on the wrong path....

You say that at great peril on FR. A lot of freepers are pro-marijuana. I agree with you. Anything that affects someones mind, legal or illegal, has an impact.

Lol, try hard and see if you can come up with a less responsive and more irrelevant answer. Trump can issue directives to his department heads. Why hasn't he if he objects?
