Most Murdered U.S. Women Killed By Husbands, Boyfriends, Exes

FRIDAY, July 21, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Most women murdered in the United States die at the hands of a current or former intimate partner, a new federal study reports.

In a review of female homicide statistics from 2003 to 2014 in 18 states, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that domestic violence was involved in about 55 percent of the deaths of 10,018 women.

"This was consistent across all racial and ethnic groups, and really highlights that intimate partner violence is a public health problem," said lead researcher Dr. Emiko Petrosky. She is a science officer for the CDC's National Violent Death Reporting System.

According to the CDC, homicide is the fifth leading cause of death for women aged 18 to 44 years. In 2015 in the United States, 3,519 women and girls died by homicide, the authors of the report noted.

The study findings showed that four out of five of the murders related to domestic violence involved a woman's current intimate partner. Another 14 percent of the murders involved a former partner.

In almost one-third of the domestic violence-related homicides, an argument preceded the victim's death. And more than one in 10 cases involved jealousy or a lovers' triangle, the statistics showed. Both of these circumstances occurred more commonly among Hispanic victims than white or black victims, the researchers noted.

In about 11 percent of cases, the victim had experienced violence within the previous month.

These circumstances show the importance of trusting one's instincts when in a relationship, said Ruth Glenn, the executive director of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

"If your instincts are saying something is not quite right -- there's too much jealousy, there's too much control, there's too much management, there's too much power -- trust your instincts and begin to think about whether this truly is a healthy relationship," Glenn said.

According to the study, black women had the highest rate of dying by homicide (4.4 per 100,000), followed by American Indian/Alaska Native women (4.3 per 100,000), Hispanic women (1.8 per 100,000), white women (1.5 per 100,000), and Asian/Pacific Islander women (1.2 per 100,000).

Approximately one-third of the victims were between the ages of 18 and 29, and most were black or Hispanic, the investigators found.

Firearms served as the murder weapon in 54 percent of cases. Another 20 percent of the homicide cases involved a sharp instrument, 10 percent involved suffocation or strangulation, and 8 percent a blunt instrument, the CDC researchers reported.

"I firmly believe that guns really cause harm to women in intimate relationships, and we have got to do more about that," Glenn said. "It's an unpopular, controversial topic, but that's why it's even more critical. We have to make something different happen."

The CDC has recommended a series of steps to reduce domestic violence, starting with education of young people, Petrosky said.

"Teaching adolescents and young adults healthy-relationship skills is really key," she said.

Petrosky said other strategies promoted by the CDC include:

Encouraging law enforcement officers to use lethality risk-assessment questionnaires during domestic violence calls. These short questionnaires can help identify victims at risk for future violence. Asking family doctors to screen women for signs of domestic violence, and getting help for suspected victims.

Promoting bystander-education programs that teach people how to intervene in intimate partner violence. "Tackling this problem really involves approaching it from multiple avenues," Petrosky said.

Women in a violent relationship should call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or 1-800-787-3224 (TTY), Glenn said.

"They are skilled at ensuring you are safe, and they can direct you to the best resources and referrals," she explained. Getting help is important, given that "the most lethal time for a domestic violence victim is when they are trying to leave," Glenn added.

"Always assess your own safety," she said. "A victim knows better than anyone when it is -- or if it is -- safe to take that next step."

The report was published in the July 21 issue of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

My understanding is that violence against men is not reported frequently enough to make statistical derivations. Some have taken a stab at guessing that less than 2% of men report such violence to the police and then only when it results in severe injuries and property destruction.

If men want to improve violence against men the best thing to do is start an education campaign trying to teach them not to just walk that kick to the nuts off and report the assault.

And no one is talking about female abuse/murder of their “intimate” partner and feminism that encourages females to attack men. . .but men are never allowed to hit back.

I agree with that, so I don’t think that most men are in much physical danger from most women.

That is interesting. It does not answer my question, “By whom are men murdered?” however. Also, neither your information nor that in the article seems to say whether the “partners” in question, who murdered or otherwise victimized , were opposite-sex or same-sex.

How can we even discuss this, when we’re supposed to believe people don’t even have a sex, only a “gender” that changes at whim?

That stat right there tells you that husbands are not the murderers -- because black and Hispanic females don't marry their "intimate partners."

These studies have been analyzed over and over again, and invariably when husbands are removed, there is barely a noticeable blip in the stats (and this remains true if you include white females and Asians.)

CDC wants you to take everything away from these numbers except the truth: The problem isn't guns, it isn't poor impulse control, it isn't failure to properly assess the violent tendencies of your boyfriend, it isn't a lack of police or social worker training. There is one simple solution: Don't open your legs for a man who won't marry you, or isn't married to you.

If there is a call of domestic abuse in my house, I'm going to jail. Even if I made the call.
Even if I have bruises on my face.
If she has bruises on her wrists, from me trying to stop her from hitting me, I'm going to jail.

For male victims: 13.5% reported the victimization to the police, in 1.6% of the cases the perepetrator was arrested.
None were convicted, and none did jail time.
The victim obtained a restraining order in 3.5% of the victimizations.
Average 3.5 victimizations per male victim, 3.4 per female victim.
The percentages above are calculated from the data on the table below.

Police take reports for female victims significantly more than for male victims. They do absolutely nothing for male victims significantly more than for female victims.

Over six times as many male perpetrators as female perpetrators are prosecuted. Female perpetrators received no convictions and, obviously,no jail time.

Men get few restraining orders. When they do, women violate them more often.
About half the men, and over two-thirds of the women, violate restraining orders against them.

Statistically speaking, husbands and wives don't murder each other; this "study," like many done before it, is total BS.

Every time these studies are re-examined by conservative think tanks they discover that leaving wives and husbands out of the equation changes the statistic no more than leaving out or including any other family members who live in the home.

Including husbands is part of an agenda driven war on men, and part of a war on marriage.

It's boyfriends, casual sexual partners, and exes who kill, not husbands and wives.

There's some verbal chicanery going on here. "Intimate partners" includes not just husbands but boyfriends and those involved in less-formal relationships. The term "intimate partners" is deliberately designed to obscure an important fact: the vast majority of women murdered by "intimate partners" are not murdered by husbands, but by partners in less-formal relationships.

Boyfriends are a much bigger threat than husbands.

In any case, careful selection of "partners" is important.

So I did a search and found that

1.9% of men are gay
1.2% of women are lesbian

1.3% of men are bi-sexual
2.2% of women are bi-sexual

From this I would figure that this has very little affect on the numbers.

Problem is, the study is crap.

These studies routinely reach the same conclusions which have nothing to do with the problem. Heritage and a number of think tanks have retrospectively dissected these studies, and the discovery is ... "surprise!" Married people do not kill each other. Husbands are thrown in as part of a war on men.

You don't have to take my word for it, examine what's in the study itself. It includes only states with large urban populations. Why do you think that is? It concludes most of the murders involve blacks and Latinas. We know statistically that blacks and Hispanics do not marry their sexual partners.

Connect the dots.

Don't be fooled. This is really a study about "boyfriends." Husbands are included as part of an agenda.

Sorry to bust your bubble on this, but these studies are reexamined over and over again, and when they are, the conclusion invariably is that these stats don't change if you leave husbands out of them.

Don't take my word for it. Look at the study. It involves only states with large urban populations, and concludes that most of the victims are black or Latina. We know statistically that blacks and Hispanics do not marry their sexual partners.

This study, and all of the other studies like it, invariably are studies about "boyfriends." Yes, there are husbands who abuse their wives, but the number of wives who beat their husbands is not zero. The difference is -- again, statistics with no agenda bear this out -- when the abused spouse is educated, they leave the marriage.

Sorry, but the claim that husbands kill their wives will not hold up under scrutiny. When you correct for the likelihood that any relative living in the home is more likely to kill you -- duh, makes sense -- husbands and wives simply are not a big part of the murder statistic compared with uncommitted sex partners.
