I’m all for cancelling it in college. It is supposed to be taught in high school!!!

Unfortunately..., that was back in the "Old Days" when High School was not a ZOO where the majority of students merely sought guidance on "self-esteem" and were accommodated by the "Education Establishment"!

For many of these CC students to be able to get up to speed, they'd have to start filling in the gaps starting with elementary school math. The teachers and students are all too lazy and unmotivated to do that. JMHO

Precisely.

Fuzzy math is a major culprit, here.

I think a lot these college students would have trouble with even basic math equations.

The intelligence required to pass basic Algebra isn’t that great. What it really requires is time; the student must take the time to learn the equations, and take the time to do the work to solve them.

Anyone who cannot master the simple task skills required to do Algebra deserves neither a college degree nor a good paying job.

lol. You think not having algebra is not patriotic. You are a nut. Funny but crazy. Nobody really needs that unless math. I would rather they get into investment and banking class or budget a household.....useful information that can help students later in life. They teach to many useless classes.

Actually, Barbie knows algebra. Too bad the fools running this supposed college do not.

A I attended Mount San Antonio Junior College in Walnut Calif. for 18 months, I could have paid the fee for the A.A. degree, or gone off to a 4 year college, but joined the army instead. Latter got B.A., M.S., and doctorate. Others in my class went to senior college latter in life with out paying graduation fees to the Jr. College. Thus, this story does not prove the community colleges fail. I took algebra, trig, and calculate in high school and was not required to take algebra again at Mount Sac. Of course being able to understand English may have helped.

So what’s he saying? The students in the community colleges (mostly “people of color”) are too stupid to learn basic algebra? Sounds racist to me.

You need to know Algebra to calculate how many pesos will be received by your relatives in Mexico when you convert your food stamp dollars into Mexican pesos at the current daily rate of exchange.

We lost the basic math education in our public schools when memorization was outlawed. It became ‘racist’ to require elementary school children to memorize the multiplication tables. How can algebra students factor 56, if they don’t know the multiplication facts that went into making 56?

use to give basic algebra questions to my nieces an nephews when they were in elementary school. No kiddin’

They got a kick out of working out the “letters-equal-numbers” things.

The article points out the soft racism of low expectations.

Problem is, in truth, for these yahoos in question, they probably are too dumb to figure it out.

For me, 1 year of calculus was required (pre-med requisite) for entrance to medical school.

And calculus I was a breeze.

You might ask, WHY would a doctor *need* to know calculus?

No, I don't use it every day, but I DO need to understand the *concepts* of calculus, how a drug is metabolized, what it means for interpreting medical studies, what does area under the curve, or a p-value mean, etc.

I can honestly say I use algebra all the time.

To figure out and calculate a pediatric dosage of a medication as an example.

Why is teaching algebra necessary?

Because it helps a student to THINK and REASON.

Why it should be a racial issue is beyond me.

Not sure if you’re joking, but not only Algebra but a whole host of subjects are very useful in life. Just not all the time and in ways that cannot be anticipated.

Electricians never needed geometry before. Now (I’m told) those principles are applied daily in their work. A decade or two ago math was thought by them as ‘useless’. Today they need to know it to keep their job.

Not to mention mastering various levels of mathematics sharpens one’s thinking.

My son’s pre-Algebra textbook for 7th grade is coming out of College of the Redwoods math dept. He is 12 years old. I taught him Pre-Algebra for 5th grade already so he will easily get through his math this year. Hard to believe that a bunch of DREAMERS at community college level can’t pull off Algebra. Guess they need a pure civil rights program and nothing else.

Kinda joking. I know certain jobs use algebra and I guess you could even possibly use it in some scenarios for getting christmas gifts

For example: John wants to spend 200 dollars on gifts for 3 family members and 2 friends. Family members will have double the money spent

X = 3 + X=2 = 200
50(3) + 25(2) = 200 dollars.
150+50=200 dollars

I guess you could do something like that in your daily life.

“...they resort to calling it a ‘civil rights issue’.”

...or for the children.

A lot of damage has been done to our society in the name of “civil rights” or “for the children”.
