The chancellor of California’s community college system said he wants to abolish the college algebra requirement and called it a “civil rights issue” in a Wednesday interview.

Eloy Ortiz Oakley, chancellor of California Community Colleges, made the argument while speaking with NPR. He pegged algebraas overly burdensome due to the disproportionate rate at which it prevents students from graduating from community colleges; nearly 50 percent of community college students do not complete their math requirement.

Whenever the anti-American left can’t justify their BS they resort to calling it a ‘civil rights issue’.

Problem is most of us don’t listen to that anymore.

Time for the satanic left to find a new schtick.

Hell I went to college in 1960 it was a waste of time then...

“This is a civil rights issue, but this is also something that plagues all Americans — particularly low-income Americans,” said Oakley. “If you think about all the underemployed or unemployed Americans in this country who cannot connect to a job in this economy — which is unforgiving of those students who don’t have a credential — the biggest barrier for them is this algebra requirement. It’s what has kept them from achieving a credential.”

This is precisely what President Dubya meant when he described "the soft bigotry of low expectations.".

Students desperately need to learn self-discipline and responsibility and achievement.

And, a successful completion of college algebra just might open some doors and give an earned feeling of accomplishment to those students who need it most.

Who would be the biggest losers if college algebra were eliminated (or diluted into oblivion)?

Underachieving minorities.

Didn’t they have to pass Algebra in High School? We need to be increasing technical courses in high school and college not reducing them. Throw in some Calculus too. ha ha

The technical engineering and design jobs in this country are being turned over to immigrant foreigners.

For leftists using “a civil rights issue” means “you lose, debate over.”

They think all they have to say are those magic words and all discussion ends.

Saw it with ‘gay marriage.’ Seeing it with this nonsense.

Actually, what Barbie said that caused the uproar is "Math Class is Tough". Outraged groups such as the NEA and the NCTM expressed editorial OUTRAGE that Barbie would say something like that.

FWIW, I wrote a Letter to the Editor of the NCTM. I stated that Math Class is SUPPOSED to be tough and we should be praising Barbie for saying Math Class is Tough. What's she supposed to say "choosing the right eye shadow is tough?" Believe it or not, the journal didn't want to print the letter. Connections to the editorial board had to encourage them. Thus, my letter defending Barbie taking a tough math class was printed.

You can't make this stuff up. It was one of my finest funny moments!

The word “algebra” comes from the Arabic “al-jabr”, meaning “reunion of broken parts”. I’m guessing that the chancellor is a filthy racist who hates Arabs.

We wants us ALLLLLL that tuition $$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!

Ferget about weather or not the “students” know—or CAN LEARN—anything at all. That’s not important at all and most likely is just whitey’s discriminationalism!!!

SHOW US THE MUNNNIEEE!!!

LOL correct!

I am appalled how many classes in “Int. algebra” there are in the CC I tutor for. The bulk of our math tutees are algebra.

Indeed, algebra is remedial in college. They should be beyond that.

I could see not requiring calculus, but I algebra is so useful, I can’t see giving anyone a college diploma if they can’ pass algebra.

This downward spiral started in the 1980s. Before that IQ tests played an important role in determining aptitude for courses (such as Algebra) that require analytic skills. Interestingly, the "low IQ" student who struggled their way through and mastered Algebra usually improved that IQ score.

Without IQ scores, standards for the necessary skills went down and students get ahead of themselves in Math. Add to that, too much reward is given for "group participation" and other stuff that can circumvent Math skills. For many of these CC students to be able to get up to speed, they'd have to start filling in the gaps starting with elementary school math. The teachers and students are all too lazy and unmotivated to do that. JMHO
